Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will embark on India tour in mid-September will visit Gujarat for a day.
Highly placed officials said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to accompany Jinping on his visit to the state most likely on September 17 — Modi's 64th birthday. The date is also significant as it is a day after the results of the 10 by-polls which will be declared on September 16.
Highly placed sources in the state government informed that top protocol officials from China visited the state capital on Thursday and discussed the plan of Jinping's visit with chief secretary Varesh Sinha and other top officials. Chinese president will visit Gandhi Ashram in the city. He may also visit Mundra Port in Kutch where several Chinese workers are working. He is likely to be accompanied by Modi. However, there is no formal communication from his office so far.
"In case, Modi fails to accompany Jinping, a senior cabinet minister will definitely join the visiting dignitary," the official said.
The Chinese president will meet chief minister Anandiben Patel and other ministers of the state. A Chinese business delegation is likely to have a detailed meeting with Gujarat government officials and top business leaders. Several Chinese companies are participating in the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit.
