With the Ladakh incursion incident by the Chinese troops still fresh on people's mind, the visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang Tuesday said the two countries should remember that they are "not afraid of each other" nor will they ever "contain" the other.

Speaking to an audience comprising of former diplomats, scholars, think-tanks and some students here, he said, "Our two sides should always proceed from the strategic and overall interest in developing the bilateral relations. We should always remember that we are not afraid of each other nor will we ever contain each other."

Underlining the importance of "political trust", he said, it is a precondition to friendship and cooperation. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi that China and India are "fellow travellers" in a common journey, Li said, "Admittedly, there are difference between our history and constitutional system. However, our shared interests far outweigh these differences... and I believe that few clouds in the sky do not shut out the brilliant sunrays of our friendship."

Dwelling on the boundary issue, he said, "There is the boundary question, left over from history...we have not shied away from this question, but agreed to push forward with negotiations on the boundary question."

The two sides, he said at the event organised by ICWA and FICCI, shared the view that the two ancient civilization, China and India, have the "wisdom" to find a fair, reasonable and mutually-acceptable solution.

Pending the final solution, the Chinese Premier said, "The two sides should improve the relevant mechanism dealing with border affairs, increase efficiency, properly manage differences and jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas."

Stressing on increasing "strategic mutual trust", Li said, "China also understands the Indian concerns on the issue of cross border rivers. And we have all along provided assistance to the Indian side on hydrological information on flood season and handling the emergency in the interest of India-China relations and humanitarian spirit."
