The presence of Chinese in Sri Lanka owned island of Kachchatheevu, considered as a threat to the security of India, is confirmed by a group of journalists and social activists from Tamil Nadu. More than thirty pre-fabricated structures with Chinese names were found on the island of Kachchatheevu located on the sea boundary between India and Sri Lanka by Tamil Nadu journalists and social activists who participated in the recent annual festival of Kachchatheevu St. Antony’s Church, according to Dinamalar, a Tamil Nadu daily. The pre-fabricated structures, however, were unoccupied but evidence of people living in them was observed by the visiting journalists from Tamil Nadu who were not permitted to photograph them by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) soldiers. The presence of Chinese in the island of Kachchatheevu is seen as a threat to the security of India by its citizens, Dinamalar added.

Sri Lankan fishermen and the SLN soldiers to whom the journalists spoke during the festival confirmed that Chinese men who were staying in Kachchatheevu had been temporarily moved out due to the festival.

They were further told that a program of joint patrol surveillance training for SLN and Chinese navy soldiers is in progress in Kachchatheevu.

‘Attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen’, ‘Tamil Nadu fishermen chased off from Kachchatheevu by SLN’, ‘Chinese surveillance tower in Kachchaitheevu’, ‘China targeting India’ are some of the recent allegations raised by Tamil Nadu fishermen.

The allegation of a Chinese surveillance tower had caused quite a stir in India and when questions were raised Sri Lanka government had categorically denied any presence of Chinese in Kachchatheevu, the journalists said.

It was suggested that representatives from both countries should jointly investigate into the allegation visiting Kachchatheevu but it did not materialize due to reluctance of Sri Lanka, they added.

Hence, journalists and social activists from Tamil Nadu had participated in the festival with the aim of finding the true situation in Kachchaitheevu using the opportunity of visiting Kachchatheevu which is out of bounds for anyone.

Sri Lanka had permitted devotees from Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu to attend the Kachchatheevu St. Antony’s Church festival this year after nearly 23 years.

The festival had not taken place from 1978 t0 2001 after which though important rituals were allowed until 2005, devotees were not permitted to take part in them.

I don't believe such a camp can threaten India's security, and the chinese words on the camp is " Home Relief".

Isn't Indian gov too sensitive for China's presence in the Indian Ocean?:coffee:

Who told you to post this crap? Do you have brain inside your skull?

China has already been encircled by indian offensive military posts with active airfields in Tajikistan (Farkhor air base), Mongolia (recently opened, top secret) and also military bases in Afghanistan. Think about countering indian nuclear missiles and fifth generation fighters rather than posting craps.

. .
Well, the photos are from indian sources and the maps shown are not correct.

It will help everyone if threadstarter instead of pasting a news item only also adds his take on the news item so that the purpose of starting the thread is clear to everyone, which will in turn help in keeping the discussion on the right track and avoid it being labelled a "flame."

Every country has a number of newspapers, dailies, weeklies, websites, etc. and india with 100s of languages and dialects is no exception to that. So, picking up a news item published in some newspaper/website and using it to start a thread actually does a great disservice to the overall stature of Defence.pk.

For example, are we going to start threads for news items for events happening in different parts of india like.

Two tigers found dead in Ranthambore national park.

Maharasthra Govt. decides to add bananas to the midday meals in schools across the state.

Hingoli to have a new veterinary hospital building soon.

Swine flu wards to be dismantled in govt hospitals across the state.

School Committe Elections in champaran next week

:blink::blink::blink:????

^^^ better ask to the thread owner SXNJ..its just meant for flaming and bashing..no useful info...

No re!! the quoted article was indeed published in the tamil news paper. In my opinion, the main article is the best translation given here...

to be honest india is being too lenient with srilanka..... no good!!

..

to be honest india is being too lenient with srilanka..... no good!!

Rather, India has been too mean to Sri Lanka, been too mean to most of its neighbors.

In conclusion, India has been too imperialistic...

This is Indeed sensitive issue and should be taken very seriously.
Our Security&intelligence agencies should not let this go off - Otherwise with hostile countries around ,
even a slight relaxation will get us another kargil.
We just can't trust these countries word's - they will look for every opportunity to hurt us badly.
We already have lost 5 decades of time trying to defend our land from enemy- just bcoz of ignorance of political leadership+ Security agencies.
Its hard to believe that country with second largest manned army is always on defensive and no first strike doctrine- it was failure of diplomatic dealings done in five decades.
First time in history - Our focus has changed from War to development &progress and to make this sustainable we need our intelligence to be on top so that no ghost of past arise again to haunt us ,
We need to handle our relationship with neighbors more cautiously without compromising our interests and play our diplomatic cards exceedingly well ,
We just cant afford a war at this cruical phase of our devlopment - Every effort should be made to keep enemy at far distance - even if it means playing like CHANKYA and winning trust of US,UN,EU by all means.

.
First of all this is not a new issue....... That island was given to Srilanka by India in 70's as a good will measure. It was supposed to benefit fishermen from both countries.(To dry the nets) But due to civil war it turned otherwise. Now the presence of chinese will arise serious question. That tent photo is just one small , I think i saw many in daily papers( Watch towers, light house etc). We need to be on guard.
