Chinese laser systems / weapons informational pool

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has made an unusual move to disclose the development of a new directed-energy weapon system.

The state-owned broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) released footage showing a new directed-energy weapon system, known as a Chinese laser gun.

Details of the new development were not disclosed, although local source reported that system designed to instantly obliterate targets near a coastal line, included small boats and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Chinese laser gun could be used against low-end asymmetric threats and will be used in the People’s Liberation Army Navy.

It is expected that the new system could have scalable power levels to be able to fire a non-lethal beam to dazzle a suspect vessel, and fire stronger beams to physically destroy a target.

Additionally, the People’s Liberation Army Navy has begun rough sea trials of its warship-mounted electromagnetic railgun installed on a Type 072II Yuting-class tank-landing ship, called the Haiyangshan.

The Haiyangshan is a tank-landing ship converted for a new futuristic electromagnetic railgun that is expected to enter China’s arsenal by 2025.

Is it NRIET's?

Chinese media have reported that a prototype laser weapon is being tested by the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

An article published on 5 April on the Sina news website contains several screengrabs taken from footage broadcast by China Central Television (CCTV) showing a trainable optical device mounted on a mobile chassis with a large main lens.

This is surmounted by two smaller devices, possibly optical and radio frequency ranging and tracking sensors. One of the images also shows an auxiliary trailer that could be used as a mobile generator, as well as Chinese troops nearby in naval uniform.

No definitive information relating to the capability of the system has been disclosed but the Sina report suggests that a truck-mounted variant could form part of a coastal defence battery, and that a shipborne device could be an alternative to the HHQ-10 short-range surface-to-air missile system, implying that the laser-based system may have a range of about 5 km.

Video of Silent Hunter Laser on display at IDEX 2019. The display board shows the laser penetrating 5 layers of 2mm steel at a distance of 2KM under 8 seconds and destroying a 6-rotor DJI drone at a distance of 4 km under 7 seconds.

据该公司发言人表示,该系统已在中国人民解放军服役5年。该系统可以拦截低空、低速和小型空中目标,包括具有抗干扰能力的无人机。

The above link claims that the Silent Hunter system has already been operational within the PLA for five years.

The background narration mentioned that new weapons are being tested on PLAN ship Bishen. I assume that this weapon is still under testing and could intercept enemy drones/possibly subsonic cruise missiles.

From the background noise it seems more like a Type 730 CIWS firing and the target was already hit thus burning but not yet completely destroyed.

Interesting article from two years ago that somehow went under my radar. Considering that the original article was posted on the official Norinco Wechat I think it is pretty credible.

As per a segment of the article, a truck mounted laser provided drone-defense security at the 2019 National Parade. According to the descriptions, it could not only intercept low flying drones but also air to surface missiles and guided bombs. It appears to be mounted on a chassis similar to that of the OW5 showcased at Zhuhai Airshow 2021. Could the OW5 be a related development or further evolution of this design?

One other interesting tidbit is that the same team also provided security at the 2015 National Parade.

兵器工业集团北方激光研究院新研制的“某激光武器系统”承担了首都国庆庆祝活动核心区域的安保任务。这是继2015年执行阅兵安保重大任务后,激光研究院再次履行新的光荣使命。
