CHINA'S JF-12 HYPERSONIC WIND TUNNEL

The JF-12 Hypersonic Wind Tunnel began operations in March 2014. It is the world's largest hypersonic wind tunnel, capable of achieving speeds of Mach 5 to Mach 9.
Along with the successful hypersonic glider vehicle WU-14 tests (which demonstrated Chinese capability in working high strength, thermal resistant aerospace materials), China has the world's largest hypersonic wind tunnel, the JF-12.

The JF-12 can produce speeds of up to Mach 9 (NASA's hypersonic wind tunnel reaches to only Mach 7).
The JF-12 would provide Chinese scientists with a convenient way to observe supersonic airflow of different scramjet configurations, in addition to directly testing material durability in laboratory conditions, rather than having to make difficult and expensive high-altitude engine test flights.

In the CCTV screenshot you posted, it clearly said the wind tunnel's speed range is between Mach 5-10, instead of 5-9.

China building world's fastest hypersonic wind tunnel

BEIJING: China is building the world's fastest hypersonic wind tunnel to develop spaceplanes, official media has reported.

"The 265-metre-long tunnel can be used to test hypersonic aircraft that can travel at speeds of up to Mach 25 (30,625 kph), 25 times the speed of sound," Han Guilai, a researcher with China's State Key Laboratory of High Temperature Gas Dynamics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), toldChina Central Television over the weekend.

Han said the current wind tunnel could simulate flights ranging from Mach 5 to 9. Researchers from CAS in Beijing have successfully tested one hypersonic plane in a wind tunnel at such speeds, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The research was published in the journal 'Science China: Physics, Mechanics & Astronomy' in February. It unveiled the 'I Plane' model, which is capable of transporting people and payloads from Beijing to New York within two hours, beating any commercial airline flight.

Wind tunnels move air around objects, making it seem like the objects are really flying. Spacecraft engineers use them to test ideas for various spacecraft designs. Long after the design work is finished, wind tunnels help make spacecraft better and safer.

The new wind tunnel will help China take the lead in wind tunnel building, though competition from other countries is still fierce, Han said.

The new tunnel will aid the engineering application of hypersonic technology by duplicating the environment of extreme hypersonic flights. Once issues are discovered during these ground tests, they will be ironed out before test flights begin," Han said.

Pentagon warns that the US is falling behind to China in hypersonic missile race
Ben Brimelow

  • Mike Griffin, the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, said at two congressional hearings that China is beating the US when it comes to hypersonic missile development.
  • He also said that the only way the US could win a war against China was through superior technology, and that the US needed to invest more in new projects to regain its technological edge.
  • The US Air Force awarded a contract worth up to $1 billion with Lockheed Martin to develop a "hypersonic conventional strike weapon."

Mike Griffin, the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, made some worrying admissions this week about China's growing military capabilities, and the US' decline in technological advances.

"Our adversaries have taken advantage of what I have referred to as a holiday for the United States," Griffin said Wednesday, referring to the West's victory over its communist rivals in the Cold War. The Pentagon official was speaking at a hearing for the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities.

"China has understood fully how to be a superpower," Griffin said. "We gave them the playbook and they are executing."

One problem discussed was anti-access/area denial through the use of hypersonic weapons— missiles or glide vehicles that fly at mach 5 or above, making them so fast that they can bypass almost all current missile defense systems.

"China has fielded or can field ... hypersonic delivery systems for conventional prompt strike than can reach out thousands of kilometers from the Chinese shore, and hold our carrier battle groups or our forward deployed forces ... at risk," he said.

He also added that the US does not have a weapon that can similarly threaten the Chinese, and that the US has no defenses against China's hypersonic missiles.

"We, today, do not have systems which can hold them at risk in a corresponding manner, and we don't have defenses against those systems," Griffin said, adding that "should they choose to deploy them we would be, today, at a disadvantage.

The statements echo similar warnings that Griffin told the House Armed Services Committee a day before. In that hearing, Griffin said that hypersonic weapons were "the most significant advance" made by the US' adversaries.

"We will, with today's defensive systems, not see these things coming," he said Tuesday.

China has already made huge gains over the US when it comes to hypersonic glide vehicles. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also said that Russia successfully tested an "invincible" hypersonic cruise missile.

Months after Putin's announcement, the US Air Force awarded Lockheed Martin with a $1 billion contract to create what is calls "hypersonic conventional strike weapon."

Boeing made a hypersonic vehicle similar to a cruise missile called the X-51 Waverider which first flew in 2010. The device flew mach 5.1 for 6 minutes during one test.

Come on China, forget about this lullaby news. It's not enough. You still falling behind. Even when your tech is 10 years ahead of US, you're still falling behind, so you have to work harder. Just work harder, and harder. Don't fall into a lullaby trick / chest punching like this. Just do it harder, harder, and harder.

You are only win when you colonize Mars and the Moon while US still trapped on Earth.

And let say it," We are still falling behind, so we have to work harder!"

It is good that the Yankees realize China has a powerful weapon that can inflict great harm on the US. Of cause China will continue to research and develop more potent weapons to defend itself from foreign interference and aggression.

The China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics has released photographs showing first guided flight test of the newest hypersonic aircraft, also called waverider.

Waverider is a hypersonic aircraft that have wedge-shaped fuselage that improves its supersonic lift-to-drag ratio by using the shock waves being generated by its own flight as a lifting surface.

According to the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics, at 6:41 am on August 3, at the northwest test range was held successfully test-fired of new Star Air-2 waverider aircraft system.

The hypersonic aircraft was successfully completed active phase, jettison of aerodynamic payload fairing, autonomous and high maneuvering turning in 10 minutes’ flight.

The Aerospace Exploration Institute of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation presented this waverider as the first hypersonic test aircraft in the aerodynamic layout of the wave body.

Waveriders are aircraft bodies shaped to skim along the top of the pressure wave created by their own supersonic flight — in essence, using the shock wave to increase the plane’s lift, or the upward force that keeps a plane in flight.

China is one of a handful of states engaged in a race to deploy a hypersonic strike platform capable of evading modern missile defense systems.

A video of Sky Star-2’s testing, conducted Friday by the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics in China’s northwest, has emerged online, with the hypersonic vehicle said to own successfully separated from its launch vehicle and engaged in high-altitude maneuvering during its ten-minute flight.

Online military magazine Defense Blog has published more detailed photos of the hypersonic systems’ launch vehicle.

Waveriders are a hypersonic aircraft design using the shock waves generated by their own flight as a lifting surface to improve their lift-to-drag ratio. Carrying a conventional or nuclear payload or simply using the immense kinetic energy unleashed by their flight to ruin their targets, the maneuverable high-speed systems can evade any existing or prospective countermeasures. Russia is expected to deploy its Avangard hypersonic boost-glide vehicle aboard the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile by late 2018 or early 2019. The US has its own projects in this direction, most notably its Boeing X-51 unmanned scramjet aircraft. In May, the US Air Force announced that it was accelerating the development of its hypersonic weapons projects to catch up with Russia and China.

Earlier this week, strategic weapons experts spotted what they believed to be testing of the CH-AS-X-13, a unique Chinese two-stage solid-fuel ballistic missile with a 3,000 km range.
