It actually is a good question. I mean 2500 U.S. Marines is many and dangerous. Even to a million men Chinese army. Remember the Korean War?

Their mission is to be an option to respond to any national threats that might befall maritime South East Asia and threats to free trade lanes, particularly when it is percieved as a threat to the United States and its allies.

They can also possibly serve as aid workers on the fly. If there is a huge disaster and no closer support.
