Chinese Major General Liu Chao will take up his new post as head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) next week, said a top UN envoy on Wednesday.

Liu, who was appointed last month as the Force Commander of UNFICYP, is currently receiving briefings at UN headquarters in New York, said Lisa M. Buttenheim, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Cyprus and UNFICYP Chief of Mission.

Liu will be the 17th Force Commander of UNFICYP, deployed on the eastern Mediterranean island since 1964 to help maintain peace and stability in Cyprus.

UNFICYP has a total of 929 uniformed personnel, supported by 39 international civilian personnel and 113 local civilian staff.

This is a good development. It is great to see Chinese military leaders serving UN peacekeeping missions like this. The world needs China's peaceful rise to be more than just a slogan. Congratulations to the PRC for contributing to the UN in this fashion.

great news. i think china can greatly contribute towards UN peace keeping operations.
