Before this dispute arose, Japan had 100% control of the islands with China never even sending our ships but during the last few months Chinese ships have been freely entering Diaoyu Island waters and Japan has been powerless to stop it. This has been a strategic gain for China. The Japanese know this.

You don't understand. Japan had 100% control. They arrested every Chinese fisherman that entered Diaoyu waters and Chinese ships didn't even bother go to that area. Now Chinese ships are there on a daily basis patrolling and hardly any Chinese fisherman get arrested. Strategically the Chinese are the best. It's not a mistake Sun Tzu was a Chinese.
