The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved Energy Division’s proposal for appointing a Chinese firm to install single-point mooring (SPM) with double pipeline for the state-run Eastern Refineries Ltd (ERL).

China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau will construct the SPM on Sonadia Island in deep sea where large oil tankers will anchor, Additional Secretary to the cabinet division Mostafizur Rahman told the reporters after a meeting of the cabinet committee on Wednesday.

As per the latest project design, two large 36-inch pipelines would be built there to pump the oil to a storage facility on Matarbari Island in Maheshkhali.

One pipeline would pump crude oil and the other diesel.

At present, large tankers anchor in deep sea and smaller ships unload and bring the oil to storage facilities of ERL.

If installed, the pipeline would save the government Tk1,000 crore annually, said Mostafizur.

Of total cost of the project amounting Tk5,426.26 crore ,Chinese government has agreed to fund 79% of the cost on condition that a Chinese company will implement the project under the government-to-government (G2G) basis, according to the proposal.

An amount of Tk1,021.19 crore will be borne by Bangladesh government.

I wonder what Indian companies are doing? Are they not eligible to participate in BD projects. How peculiar and how pathetic. The way the bragging Indian posters talk I thought BD is already in India's pocket. So, India is not yet a suppa pawa!!!!

That's an interesting development... I hope it will have provisions of being converted into a full-fledged sea port...

Bro, trust me as China develops into a superpower around 2025-2030, this will checkmate Indian influence in BD.
Even if any BD government wanted to be friendly with India, they can never offer the military technology, import market or funding for infrastructure projects like China can. Just think how large the Chinese textile import market will be in 10 years as China completely comes out of textile production!

That is why I am not too worried about Awami League and India as this is only a temporary marriage of
convenience between the two.

There is a reason China BD relations has tightened after 2010. More than half of those parties in 14 party morcha is pro China. Those parties and many awami leaders were pro-Peking activist during the large part of 60's, 70's and 80's. And as it is Chinese policy to not interfere but take full advantage to further their goals. This is why Japan , US will not close their hands from BD after over hyped terror threat.

Look at what happened after Gulshan, while other countries was shouting like a idiot, China secured major railway and bridge-tunnel deals. And now little by little they are taking up the port deals like this one.

Looks like they already lost PK to China, so especially Japan would at any situation will want to maintain the role of main development partner of BD. If you think Kerry was here just to exchange niceties, you are wrong.

The Chinese pursue an interesting policy... They will engage with you no matter what, if not militarily, then economically, if not economically then culturally...

These economic and military deals with China are just the ones on screen. Behind the scene, the cultural and youth exchanges with China are in full swing... There is a reason why you won't find a single anti-China Bangladeshi...

Lol, I see two nincompoops sucking up to their Chinese masters.

So you think that Indian companies like Essar or L&T don't have capability to do that, right ?

This indicates that the deep sea port remains a big possibility in near future, to be developed by the Chinese.
Payra has gone to China. So did Chittagong port upgrade and expansion. So will Sonadia port too.
