A deal has been signed with a Chinese firm for the construction of Bangladesh’s first Bus Rapid Transit in Dhaka.

The Roads and Highways Department has signed China Gezhouba Group Co Ltd for the building of a 16-kilometre transit lane, 32-kilometre pavement and a separate lane for slower vehicles.

The project, worth more than Tk 8 billion, will see a transitway built from Gazipur to Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport.

The BRT is expected to ferry 25,000 passengers, in both directions, every hour once construction is completed in the next 30 months.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque were present at the signing ceremony at a hotel in Dhaka.

Project Director Ekram Ullah then talked about the features of the route –

>> The entire bus transitway is 20.50 kilometres long. From Uttara to Tongi, there will be a 4-kilometre elevated lane. The remaining 16 kilometres will be underground.

>> There will be terminals at both ends - Gazipur and the airport – with 25 stations in between.

>> Buses will leave each station every two to five minutes. The total time for travelling the entire route is 50 minutes.

>> The articulated buses for the lane will be 18 metres long. Fares will be counted with electronic smartcards.

Another white elephant in South Asia after Lahore metrobus. :welcome:

Rawalpindi and Islamabad also have BRT.

And BRT is way cheaper and efficient than any sunk-cost Rail metro system with massive overhead and installations.

I am tired of discussing the merits - they have been discussed here ad infinitum....

The only people that gain from Rail metro projects is the politicos and leaders, they get hundreds of millions in percentage cuts from the likes of Bombardier. Rail Metro fanboys like you and me won't get squat even if we cry ourselves hoarse.

An elevated/underground BRT is not going to be cheap in any manner whatsoever.

And that coupled with low capacity.

LOL. Lahore metro is not the only one rapid bus service in Pakistan, but its far successful than Mumbai metro. :p:

Mumbai metro ridership daily ridership is ‎277,000 for just 1 line

BRT is not an either or proposition to the Metro - it is an adjunct to it. We will build both. Crucially needed because of the situation Dhaka is in.

I will talk about TransJakarta a bit. Jakarta although planned a bit better than Dhaka some years ago, was in the same boat fifteen years ago. Horrible traffic jams, really bad crumbling infrastructure. BRT and Metro changes all that.

TransJakarta is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was the first BRT system in Southern and Southeast Asia. The TransJakarta system began operations on January 25, 2004. TransJakarta was designed to provide Jakarta citizens with a fast public transportation system to help reduce rush hour traffic. The buses run in dedicated lanes and ticket prices are subsidized by the regional government.

In January 2016, the ridership was 320,000 passengers per day.

In June 2016 it served 10,206,000 passengers, and in August 2016 it served 11.6 million passengers.

In 2011, the system achieved the annual peak performance with the buses carried 114.7 million passengers and then in the next following years the number were stable and in 2014, the buses carried 111.6 million passengers.

The fare cost Rp 3,500 (27 US cents) per passenger (2016). The subsidy per passenger-ticket in 2011 was around Rp 2,900 ($0.29) and for 2012 the subsidy was expected be around Rp 2,100 ($0.21) per passenger-ticket.

TransJakarta has the world's longest BRT system (210.31 km in length), with 12 primary routes and 10 cross-corridor routes. Three more corridors were due to commence construction in 2014 or 2015 and will be partially elevated whereas the existing corridors are at ground level. In addition there are 18 'feeder' routes that continue past the end of the exclusive busways into the municipalities surrounding Jakarta and use special buses that allow for boarding at either ground level or the TransJakarta station platforms.

TransJakarta routes take advantage of road areas under elevated Rail Metro lines and Flyovers.

As exciting as it is - let's stop measuring phalluses and let's discuss merits and demerits of a BRT vs. Rail Metro. That - although boring, would help everyone...

Maybe @madokafc can graciously provide some real world perspective on TransJakarta....

I was replying to that guys comment there.

Do roads in Dhaka have the space to accomodate dedicated bus lanes?

. . .
I have never been to Dhaka. But I suppose it is also congested like Kolkata or Mumbai. Bangladesh should establish metro rail and not metro bus. Railway has far greater capacity, speed and especially safety than bus service. Bangladesh already has enough buses. Go for metro rail.

Metro rail is also being built. And Dhaka is probably more congested than Mumbai and Kolkata.
