Chinese fighter jets briefly entered Taiwan's airspace, prompting the island's air force to issue verbal warnings and "active responses" to drive away the intruders, the Taiwanese defence ministry has said.

The Su-30 fighters, some of China's most advanced jets, entered Taiwan's air defence identification zone to its southwest on Tuesday, according to a statement. The fighters were given verbal warnings to leave, after which Taiwanese air force jets drove them away, the ministry added.

The incursion came as Taiwan announced that its largest annual live-fire drill would be held next month, including computer simulations and an exercise to defend against forces landing on the island.

China has ramped up fighter flights and warship crossings near Taiwan or through the Taiwan Strait since President Tsai Ing-wen was first elected in 2016. Beijing, which claims the self-ruled island as its own, views Tsai as a separatist bent on formal independence for Taiwan.

Tsai rejects Beijing's rule and says Taiwan is already an independent state called the Republic of China.

On February 10, a Chinese military jet briefly crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait separating the two sides in the first significant incursion since Tsai's landslide re-election in January.

Tsai has lashed out at Beijing for "meaningless and unnecessary" moves.

Since then, Taiwan has reported two Chinese air force drills near the island. A Chinese aircraft carrier and five warships also sailed close to Taiwan in April.

Beijing has vowed to one day seize Taiwan, by force if necessary.

Speaking at Beijing's Great Hall of the People on May 29, Li Zuocheng, chief of the Joint Staff Department, reiterated that China is prepared to use all means necessary to prevent Taiwan from becoming independent.

"If the possibility for peaceful reunification is lost, the people's armed forces will, with the whole nation, including the people of Taiwan, take all necessary steps to resolutely smash any separatist plots or actions," said Li.

"We do not promise to abandon the use of force, and reserve the option to take all necessary measures, to stabilise and control the situation in the Taiwan Strait," he added.

The United States has stepped up its military activities near the island too, with semi-regular navy voyages through the narrow Taiwan Strait.

In a separate statement on Tuesday, Taiwan's defence ministry said a US C-40A, a military version of the Boeing 737, had entered Taiwanese airspace with permission, though it did not land at any Taiwanese airports.

The US aircraft took off from Japan's Okinawa island, where there is a major US airbase, and flew over northern and western Taiwan on its way to Southeast Asia, Taiwanese media reported.

While Washington and Taipei have no formal diplomatic ties, the US is Taiwan's strongest international supporter and main arms supplier, another source of US-China tension.

WTF this is a misleading title.

the PLAAF DID NOT enter Taiwan's airspace, the PLAAF fighters only entered Taiwan's ADIZ which by the way includes most of the Taiwan straight , the misleading title has totally blown what happened out of proportion just to creat some news out of nothing, the PLAAF fighters were flying in international airspace.

The US C-40's flight was approved by Taiwan's defense authority, and this was a straight-up provocation hatched by the Taiwan and US militaries, signifying the increasing military cooperation between them, Song said, noting that this can also be seen as a de facto joint military drill, indicating the US could lend Taiwan support in a war and give Taiwan secessionists courage to fight the mainland.

Beijing-based military expert Wei Dongxu told the Global Times on Tuesday that the deployment of the Su-30 fighter jets amid the US operation showed the PLA is always on high combat alert, and it can react very fast when intruders approach Taiwan.

The PLA is capable of covering the entire Taiwan and nearby airspace, and weave dense defense positions, and US aircraft could be identified and locked on by PLA fighter jets, Wei said.

Wei noted that the Su-30 is fighter jet with long endurance, advanced radar systems and can carry medium-range air-to-air missile that can shoot down targets from afar. Sending the Su-30s also showed the PLA's capability to seize air superiority.

It appears that PLAAF locked on to the C-40 with fire control radar.

USAF will come back next time with jet fighters flying over Taiwan. This will happen in a matter of weeks or days. Then we will have a 21st century furball over Taiwan airspace. Ballistic missiles will also likely strike against Taiwan air defense installations.

Big p8ssy USA wants China involved in a war, especially after HK decision by China. India could not draw China into a war, so now they are trying to get Taiwan into a war with China.

To surpass the US, China needs to focus on Made in China 2025. Then surpass the US military. Then rule the US through fear of China.

China getting involved in a conflict now is like a 15 year old genius opting out of going to a top university to study, instead going to be a farmer. The kid is still a genius as a farmer, though it would be better to focus on economy.

Empires are born from war. It's time for the birth of the Chinese Empire. From the republic to the empire!

China is already there.

China already has an empire. Tibet, Xinjiang, Manchu and North Korea as ally. They have Shanghai Cooperation Org, OBOR/BRI. If the US ever attacks you, you expand that empire to the stans in Central Asia (if US bases there are used) and Taiwan (if Taiwan is used).

US is a house of crappy cards. China is the real deal. No need for an empire from more expansion, China has an empire.

Only sovereign state is entitled to airspace. Taiwan doesn't qualify.

Technically speaking it's Chinese airspace. PLAAF should patrol the space over Taiwan on a routine basis.

Interesting out of 100s of j's , the plane being used by China is a su30?
