We could never have done it if the global policeman, the sole superpower, had not been so spineless.

They are acting provocatively but they stop short of (out of lack of enough national power to coerce China) stopping China. China makes use of the provocations wisely, using the extra legitimacy to further the development and national security initiatives in the SCS.

At the end of the day, it is the US and jumpy Vietnam and the Philippines that really attempt to stir the waters; China ain't losing anything but further strengthening its position as a global manufacturing and trade leader.

US tactics and strategies might have worked on other nations, but not on countries that might strike back equally hardly, if not more.

Civil vessels of course can travel thru it freely, the warships has to address notices in advance. And keep off 12 nm of islands.

Naturally formed islands only, that is. Artificially formed islands are not awarded a territorial zone, just a 500m safety zone.

The United States on Monday sent a guided-missile destroyer to challenge 12-nautical-mile territorial limits that China claims around artificial islands it built in the South China Sea.

A U.S. defense official said the USS Lassen was nearing Subi and Mischief reefs in the Spratly archipelago, features that were submerged at high tide before China began a massive dredging project to turn them into islands in 2014.

The Lassen would be in the area for several hours in what would be the start of a series of challenges to China's territorial claims in one of the world's busiest sea lanes, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, the official said the ship would likely be accompanied by a U.S. Navy P-8A surveillance plane and possibly P-3 surveillance plane, which have been conducting regular surveillance missions in the region.

On Dec. 10, two U.S. Air Force B-52 strategic bombers on a routine long-range mission flew within 12 nautical miles (the standard boundary of the territorial waters) of one of the seven Chinese man-made islands in the South China Sea, sparking China’s protests.

According to the Pentagon, the aircraft were not flying a so-called “freedom of navigation” mission: one of the aircraft flew within 2 miles of an artificial island along unintentional route.

Interesting, since “navigation errors” are a bit surprising on long-range bombers equipped with redundant GPS, INS systems that should make their navigation quite accurate.

US even wouldn't dare to help PH or VN to explore oil or gas in SCS which is contested, what make you think US dare to help Vietnam and PH to build the contested islands? This like to say that China help ISI or any government oppose to US in middle east or else where, US shouldn't complain neither....there is a red line that both China and US don't want to cross or it will trigger some undesirable consequence.
