Historically the island of Taiwan has always been an alienated part of China and sovereignty is not negotiable. Not unless US wanted a nuclear war with China.

After Meiji Japan launched an unprovoked attack on China and forced the Qing Dynasty to sign an unequal Treaty of Shimonoseki where they seized Taiwan and the surrounding isles including Diayutai and compensation in gold.
But all these were amended after the defeat of Japan in WW2 in compliance to Cairo declaration and the Potsdam Treaty.

Taiwan along with all the islands in the South China Sea were returned back to China in 1945. Rand Map listed all these as China territories back then.

Back in 1945 China was jointly ruled by KMT-CPC until the civil war broke out in 1947. Technically the civil war never ended.
