China has introduced a new law with the aim of preventing violence against medical workers.

The announcement comes days after a female doctor was stabbed to death at a Beijing hospital.

The law bans any organisation or individual from threatening or harming the personal safety or dignity of medical workers, according to state media.

It will take effect on 1 June next year.

Yang Wen was working at Beijing Civil Aviation General Hospital's emergency ward on 24 December when she was attacked by a man.

Chinese media claims he was related to a patient who was receiving treatment on the ward.

Zhao Ning, an official at the National Health Commission said: "We are deeply aggrieved and enraged by this incident, particularly as the relevant law was being deliberated."

Under the new law, those "disturbing the medical environment, or harming medical workers' safety and dignity" will be given administrative punishments such as detention or a fine. It will also punish people found illegally obtaining, using or disclosing people's private healthcare information.

It's not the first case of a death or violence in a Chinese hospital.

According to CGTN, there were at least 12 "medical incidents" involving violence and two medical workers were killed in 2018 alone.

A recent survey by Dingxiang Yuan, an online site for healthcare professionals, found 85% of doctors had experienced violence in their workplace.

The article went on to add: "Doctors are responsible for protecting society from diseases. Who protects doctors?"

An article in medical journal The Lancet claims there are many reasons why doctors in Chinese hospitals are under threat.

Poor funding can result in errors or breakdowns in communication between doctors and patients, while other factors include negative media reports about medical staff, unrealistic expectations and large healthcare bills for families on low incomes.

In October, a female doctor was fatally stabbed by a cancer patient at a hospital in Lanzhou.

In August 2018, a doctor at a Tianjin hospital was stabbed to death by three men.

A few months before, a doctor in Anhui province was stabbed to death following an argument with the husband of a patient.

Some hospitals have even resorted to teaching its medical staff self defence.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese health official has vowed "zero tolerance" for violence against medical staff as the country works to prevent such behavior through legislation.

Zhao Ning, an official with the National Health Commission, made the remarks in response to the death of a doctor in Beijing, who died after being attacked by the son of a patient.

"We are deeply grieved and enraged by this incident, particularly as the relevant law was being deliberated," Zhao said.

The National People's Congress, China's top legislature, voted Saturday to adopt the law on promoting basic medical and health care.

The newly adopted law clarifies the legal responsibilities and penalties for violent acts against medical personnel, and stipulates that medical and health institutions are public places.

Besides hospitals, governments at all levels, relevant departments and the whole society should work together to maintain order in public places, Zhao said.

The law will take effect from June 1, 2020.

Not on this scale...as said in the video, China passed a new law protecting Doctors against violence....which other country has to do that to protect its doctors lol??

The passing of the law itself says that the issue was widespread in China.

If this was a single incident or a couple happen every year, your post makes sense but I'm sure a lot got killed for the Chinese govt. to step up.....they usually don't care about Chinese lives to begin with.

There are attacks on medical personal in the West, actually, there was this news where two Paramedic was attacked while trying to save a bikie a couple of months ago. However, most of these attacks are to frontline medical personnel (Paramedic, Nurse and so on). There aren't too many attack (If at all) happened inside a hospital, there were one in US in 2017, not quite remember the detail but I remember it was a Doctor who shoot and killed another Doctor, and if I remember correctly, the victim is a female Chinese Doctor and I believe the motive is either jealousy or sexual harassment or something like that.

Anyway, I think this come down to two problem. First, there aren't enough counselling service in China, in the west, doctor and nurse were train to deal with these type of "Bad News" so that it would not turn violent, also there are specialist who stationed in hospital to help people with accepting the loss of their loved one. Second, the security is not enough in Chinese hospital, I am not sure about the security level in Hospital in China, in Australia, hospital is very heavily guarded, you probably wouldn't be able to bring a knife inside a hospital. It would probably easier to steal one inside. There were this guy who got shot by the Police outside Nepean Hospital in 2018 (I live just outside Nepean Hospital by the way)

I think they should focus the effort on the two things I mentioned. This should not be tolerated in any hospital, be it in Australia, China or Iraq.​
