Chinese delegation visits Pakistan's flood-ravaged areas for reconstruction - People's Daily Online November 04, 2010
A Chinese delegation comprising officials from various government departments visited the flood- ravaged areas in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, assuring its country's support in rehabilitation of the flood-affected people.
The delegation arrived at Chakdara area and inspected the damaged roads and bridges over the Swat river. According to the National Highway Authority, over 1,300 km of road and dozens of bridges were destroyed by the flood this year only in Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa province.
Commending the incessant efforts of Pakistani authority for providing relief to the flood victims and reconstruction, Lv Kejian, the head of the Chinese delegation, said his country wished to make all possible contribution to rehabilitation task.
He said that the current situation is a challenge for Pakistan and China will stand by Pakistan in this hour of need. He also encouraged Chinese companies to join in the process of reconstructing the flood-ravaged areas.
On Tuesday the delegation held a series of meetings with Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other institutions discussing the reconstruction work in the wake of the natural calamity.
During the meeting, Sajjad Naeem, Chairman of NDMA, briefed the visiting delegation about the current flood situation and the ongoing rescue and relief operation in the affected areas.
According to a joint report of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, Pakistan needs 25 to 30 billion U.S. dollars to reconstruct infrastructure, rehabilitate the affected people and recover from damages caused by recent devastating floods in July and August.
The joint Damage Need Assessment (DNA) survey also estimated that Pakistan has suffered 9.5 billion dollars losses to public and private property.
China has provided huge unconditional aid in accordance to the need of Pakistan to help in the efforts of flood rescue, relief and reconstruction since the flood hit the country. Until now China has pledged to give a total of 250 million U.S. dollars to Pakistan, its largest-ever humanitarian aid to a foreign country.
