Chinese Defence minister in Sri Lanka
The State Councilor and Minister of National Defence of the People's Republic of China (PRC) General Liang Guanglie arrived to the Island on a five day official visit today (29th August) morning. General Liang Guanglie is leading a 23 member high ranking delegation of senior military officers on his visit.
Up on his arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport General Liang Guanglie was received by the Military Liaison Officer of the Ministry of Defence Major General (Rtd) Palitha Fernando, Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetillake, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral DWAS Dissanayake and Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal HD Abeywickrama.
General Guanglie during his visit is expected to call on HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of External Affairs and Secretary Defence and Urban Development. He is also scheduled to visit the Defence Services Command and Staff College at Sapugaskanda, Army Cantonment in Panagoda and the Defence Services College in Colombo.
General Guanglie assumed the office of State Councilor and Minister of National Defence in the People's Republic of China (PRC) in March 2007. He has held many distinguished appointments such as Member of the Central Military Commission of PRC and Chief of General Staff of the People's Liberation Army in November 2002, Commander of Nanjing military area command (December 1999) and Commander of Shenyang military area command (November 1997).
General Guanglie was accorded a full military Guard of Honour this evening at the MoD Premises in the presence of Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L Peiris, Chief of Defence Staff and tri-service Commanders.
