Patented means it's their own innovation which no others had done before, You can't patent a product if it was invented by someone else.

you can, example Pure Sodium both DuPont and BASF have two distinct patents for making Pure Sodium for solar panels and nuclear reactors. The end product is identical but the process for creating it is different.

Patented doesn't necessarily mean that it was not done before, but the tech is unique. Some times as a part sometimes as a whole.

I see some niche uses for transparent screens (public advertisement and info boards), but don't see them becoming mainstream.
