Chinese authorities find 22 fake Apple stores

A total of 22 fake Apple stores have been uncovered in one Chinese city.

Authorities in Kunming began searching out the copycats after pictures of one convincing replica were circulated on the web.

An early search found five fake stores, two of which were shut down for trading without a licence.

Now, according to Chinese trade officials, 22 have been found unlawfully using Apple's brand and logo.

The investigation into unauthorised Apple stores in Kunming was brought about when an American living in the city published a blog post describing a visit to one such shop.

Describing it as a "beautiful rip-off", BirdAbroad revealed how far the owners had gone to copy the decor and ambience of a real Apple store.

Staff also wore the same colour T-shirts as real Apple staffers, and sported lanyards of the same design.

The blog post was widely shared around the world and prompted Chinese trade officials in Kunming to take action.

The Administration for Industry and Commerce in Kunming said its investigation had unveiled a slew of stores violating Apple's registered trademarks.

The shops have been told to stop using the logos as Chinese laws prohibit copying the "look and feel" of another company without permission.

It is not clear whether the shops being reprimanded were selling products sourced from Apple distributors in the country or grey market imports.

The Kunming retail watchdog said it would step up its monitoring efforts and set up a hotline through which the public can report unauthorised Apple shops they find

O' my God.. 22 fake Apple store in one city I am sure there will thousands across the country.. Are these guys in for breaking some fakery records?

This is exactly what Apple wants.
If only they are selling its genuine products, Apple do not care if they are authorized or unauthorized. Its revenue in China amounted to $6.6 billion last quarter, sounds funny?
I am sure your imagination is breaking some records.

Its not good for Apple because fake stores would be bad for Apple if they were selling fake stuff but they are actually selling original Apple Products .The sales will dip as i have seen on different sites that Apple has only few stores there.

wow, the amount of work done on these stores is quite amazing though, why would the Chinese want to do this when they already have such a strong industry, quite sad, they are just making a fool out of themselves and proving the point that no copyrights are safe in China.

Dude, Companies logo and Brand name are there for some reason.. The misuse of it has a potential of bringing bad name to the brand . Isn't it?

its a big matter, brands names like Apple are worth billions, you cannot allow people to steal that name just to make sales. Apple is a giant, it will make up for the sales but it cannot allow such theft to go on.

Can somebody answer why you need to do this?? You have enough money to open real Apple/IKEA Stores if you have so much fascination for Apple/IKEA products. Why fake it out??

As long as they aren't selling fake apple products, don't see why Apple would mind it.

^^^^

Again, Brand name and Brand value are there for some reason..

Its true. An HTC phone and an iPhone with exactly the same components and probably made by the same company are put side to side.

A chinese customer will rate the HTC phone as being worth 1000 RMB, and the iPhone at 5000 RMB.

sad and pathetic. At least these fake apple stores rip losers off of their money even more. Survival of the fittest, get smart or get left behind.
