China’s Type 055 destroyer (12,000 tonnes) along with Japan’s Atago-class destroyer (12,000 tonnes), United States Navy’s Zumwalt-class destroyer (15,000 tonnes) does make India’s latest and yet to be inducted Visakhapatnam class (8,000 tonnes) stealth guided missile destroyers look like nimble when in direct compression with guided missile destroyers fielded by this countries.

Visakhapatnam class (Project 15B) which used same hull design of Kolkata-class destroyer (Project 15A) does have many differences but limited design aspect also made sure that while firepower and intensive network-centric layout improved considerable but to save cost and maintain the same hull and propulsion package as the Project 15A Kolkata class, Indian Navy did take cheaper option to improve its firepower without much investment but India’s next stealth guided missile destroyers will need new design due to changing firepower of destroyers in the region which not only outpower India in firepower but also in the endurance .

India will not only require new stealth guided missile destroyers with higher displacement and more firepower but also capabilities which are much more beyond stealth guided missile destroyers used in the region but also be able to dominate the region. Project 23560 which is an export version of the Lider-class destroyer developed by Russia with a displacement of over 17,500 tonnes should be India’s Inspiration to India’s next stealth guided missile destroyers.

New Lider-class destroyer is 200-meter long and 20-meter wide vessel will displace up to 17,500 metric tonnes. It will travel at a maximum speed of 32 knots. Dubbed as a multipurpose warship, Lider-class destroyer will have anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic missile, anti-surface and anti-submarine capabilities.

Lider-class destroyer is expected to be outfitted with Kalibr-NK anti-ship, anti-submarine and land-attack missiles, as well as P-800 Oniks supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles with a range of more than 300 kilometres. Zircon hypersonic missiles could also be added to the mix with Indian contest Indian Navy will like to supplement it with BrahMos, BrahMos-2 along with LR-SAM to provide required indigenous firepower.

Next-generation Lider-class destroyer warship will be capable of spending up to 90 days at sea without additional refuelling or support which will give Indian Navy legs to operate far from its bases and in Asia-Pacific region or deeper in the Indian Ocean region (IOR). Russia’s Lider-class destroyer outgun the largest surface China’s Type 055 destroyer (12,000 tonnes) and United States Navy’s Zumwalt-class destroyer (15,000 tonnes) but also will have provision for nuclear propulsion system which India can decide once an Indigenous design based on Lider-class destroyer warship can be developed in follow-on projects.

Lider-class inspired or a new design based next stealth guided missile destroyers with displacement over 15,000 tonnes will send a strong message to the region rivals but also will provide much needed additional firepower in the region for Indian Navy to dominate Indian Ocean region (IOR).

I'm not sure going back to battle cruisers is a great idea. I'd stick to sub 10k class destroyers. The offensive capabilities of today's AShM make these elephants sitting ducks.

That's depend on task.
055 can be seen as a bigger Ticonderoga cruiser or Alibok III destroyer, complete task at blue water, at deep ocean area far from land, with carrier or Amphibious warships or Alone to complete the task

DDG1000, another type task, at the idea from ocean to land, designed as multi-mission stealth ships with a focus on land attack. 1. stealth , can reach nere the land. 2. land attack, first idea with the Advanced 155 mm Gun, with the range of 200km, hope cheaper than missile, but now, only order 3. bcs expensive, the air defence ability is weaker than new Alibok destroyer, for land attack general countries, too many tools and cheaper than DDG1000, for land attack bigger countries, 200km range is too dangerous。Alibok III destroyer is a better choice

12K tonnes needed to ram other countries fishing boats ?

12K tonnes needed to ram other countries boats ?

Russia’s Lider-class destroyer?

Why not day dream about it after Russia is able to reproduce type 052C class technologies?

By the time our Russian friends' Lider-Class destroyer is in service, China will most probably be starting to field her next generation "Alll-round" Ship.:enjoy:

Looking forward to THE Ship's prototype in or around 2020. :partay:

It is the argument used by those who say the carrier's day is over, including many Chinese here.
There is a billion Chinese. In Chinese reports the radar signature was as low as a 500 tonne boat.

India should stick best to its cost effective and deterrent patrols. Not to go around competing with tonnages. First lets complete project 17B and build loads of them before moving to the next stage. We are not going to deploy or fight in far away places. For Indian Ocean, 64 missiles per ship is enough. There is still space available which can increase missile capability to 72 or 80.

Chinese have the uncommon obsession with bigger, tonnage kind of things. We however should stick to smart, efficient ships which work for us. We need 12 17B ships with a more powerful radar and after that lets move on bigger things.

Tell that to the Japanese, Americans and Koreans. You are thinking this ship is just about missiles, I dare say the radar technology there is on par with the Americans. Dual S/X band AESAs bro. Another one is UHF/VHF anti stealth radar, it's designed to hunt F22s. This is the most powerful conventional non-stealth navy ship on earth.

And please stop using the multi story mast design above or the Kolkata class design. It's so obvious the ships center of gravity is not stable. Better follow 055/zumwalt style mast

Ok ship designer. I believe Indian Naval Engineers know more than our layman analysis.

Reg the other part, India wont go for tonnage competition just for the sake of it. What we need is a advanced Radar. Missile capability of 64 is enough for Indian ocean after which our bombers can take care.

When the Chinese are transparent about their systems, then we can accept whether its "on-par" with Americans or no. No public debate available without which you guys wont be able to criticize Indian weapons in the first place.

It was never a tonnage competition. WW2-era Battleships had vastly greater tonnage than these modern ones, the Battleship HMS Vanguard in 1946 was over 50,000 tons.

The Type 055 is larger than other modern destroyers because they wanted more space for advanced tech, radars and weapons. Same reason the Zummwalt is a similar size.

If it was an issue of ego then people would still be building WW2 sized Battleships. But it's not a good idea.
