chinas once hot economy is turning cold ?

I think the current growth rate is OK. I am not a big fun of using GDP as an indicator of economic success. Yes, as CD said, the government pressed too hard on the brake to avoid high inflation. I think it is still better than having a high GDP growth well the price goes out of the control - the latter can potentially cause havocs to the society.

In addition, the quality of GDP is more important than the GDP number itself. I think overall China's economy is getting better, not because of continuous GDP growth, but because compared to 10 or 20 years ago, there're much more Chinese companies competing at the global stage. And average citizen's life gets much better, 20 years ago phone was a luxury and now there's 1.06 billion cellphone users in China. For these reasons, Indian's economy has been a success as well in spite of the current situation.

i agree, the GDP isn't the most important, its whether people are really happy. today more people are happy than 10 years ago. thats what is important.

meh, the economy did slow down, any government official will admit to this in fact it was enigneered by the government but they may have hit the brakes a little too hard, but generally analysis still predict an over 8% growth for this year and the government is starting to promote growth by lowering reserves and such again. mean while hows the rest of the world fairing? whats india's growth number?

china has to change at some point but in the short to medium term there is nothing to worry about, the chinese government has more options and financial power than just about anyone.

It always amazes me that some people believe that others are brainwashed when they know something only through media. Let's cut this cr*p and stay with the thread topic. Your opinion will be more respected if you conclude it after seeing China by yourself.

I was there for a few hours in HK - layover between LAX and Bombay. Got my wallet stolen from the lounge. The airport "security" was of little use - probably in on it. Thankfully, my passport was not stolen.

I now make it a point to avoid any Chinese stopovers.

Jackdaws, you were on a Bombay layover. The pickpocket was probably a fellow Indian passenger. How many Chinese are flying to Bombay? Zero.

Unless you were wearing giant gold chains and a garland made from $100 Benjamins, Chinese pickpockets are going after the white guy.

.
Would this decline have been caused by the economic crisis in the rest of the world, as some argue, or would it have been caused by the Chinese incompetence in refurbishing their corrupt system into a more sustainable (i.e. democratic) system that benefits all?

Actually, I was assured by a fellow passenger that it was a Chinese lady who was one of the cleaning staff in the lounge. She apparently took it from my coat. The cops were useless. I asked to see CCTV footage but they either didn't understand or refused.

Chinese of course don't fly to Bombay - the walk across the Himalayas - get their asylum papers and then take one of those over crowded trains once they have their RCs in place.

No offence that just sounds retarded, if you don't have street smarts that's fine but don't lay blame on your surroundings.

You sound like one the tourist who leave their wallets unattended then blame everyone around them when it goes missing.

Singapore is mainly Chinese occupied so feel free to avoid our airport too lol

Except a premier lounge in an airport is not a street. You tend to be careful inside cities, but it is not unheard of to let your guard down in an airport lounge. But lesson learned. Singapore is fine - people are better, speak English and crime is low.

I know you got an axe to bear with some members here and to be fair there are a number of slandering around on both Chinese and Indian fronts., but honestly things are not as bad as it may seem. My Indians friends working in China feel more welcome there than in some of the commonwealth countries (or at least this Indian chap I know who really loves a good drink). Sh*t happens in any country, I went to Italy and got pick pockets attempt to steal from me 4 times in a week but I still love the place. Friendly people great food, beautiful ladies. I won't even mention france, or racism experience in Australia.

No city is perfect, accept the flaws and be wary of them and take in the people and the beauty.

The cleaning lady was probably Vietnamese or your beloved Tibetan. Ironic.

Rome is the worst. They almost took my wife's passport, but I caught the kid. Northern Italy is not bad. Fewer gypsie pickpockets.

Agreed Rome is the worst, funny thing is Naples and Sicily were pretty good. Plus the people there are extra friendly despite the bad reputation they have for the Mafia

I've never been robbed, anywhere. And I travel around the world a lot.

only Rome is dangerous.

It was from my own experience." one Arab cam to me and my wife and tried to ask us something. and at the same tiime two police appears.
