If this test is viewed in context with a variety of other similar experiments conducted by the PLA in the past years, then it is quite apparent that they are testing bits of what may form a multi-layer missile defense network.

Here is a simple speculation of its potential constituents, given the published reports regarding various missile tests:

1st layer: ground-based missile defense
2nd layer: HQ-26 / HQ-19 (the former may be certified in 2015 at the earliest while the latter was first tested in 2003)
3rd layer: HQ-29 (equivalent of the PAC-3, first tested in 2011)
4th layer: HQ-9B

This is just one of the tests that will be carried out on a number of “missile” systems this year。
