Amid the protracted conflict and rising Islamophobia in China, Communist Party officials are responding by creating a surveillance state. In the 12 months preceding September 2017 alone, the party-state advertised nearly 100,000 security positions in Xinjiang. Every resident of the region has been affixed with the label “safe,” “normal,” or “unsafe,” based on metrics such as age, faith, religious practices, foreign contacts, and experience abroad. Those deemed unsafe, whether or not they are guilty of wrongdoing, are regularly detained and imprisoned without due process.

Estimates indicate that as many as 800,000 individuals, mostly Uighurs, have been incarcerated in the re-education camps. Based on the current population of Uighurs in Xinjiang, which stands at some 11 million, this amounts to the extrajudicial detention of nearly 10 percent of the ethno-national group.

The man, from a middle-class Uighur family, came to study in the United States a few years ago. He succeeded in the Chinese education system, even earning a degree from a university in eastern China. In 2017, Iman flew back to China for the summer recess, planning to spend time with friends on the east coast before he returned to Xinjiang to see his mother. Despite the exhaustion from the long flight, he was filled with joy as he landed in the Chinese metropolis where he’d previously lived for several years, despite the discrimination he would likely face. Ethnic minorities in China, especially Uighurs, are often denied hotel rooms.

As he remained strapped in his seat, a flight attendant approached. “They are asking for you,” the woman told him. “It’s probably just a visa issue.” Her words were of little comfort — after all, he possessed a Chinese passport.

Iman was held for nine days in a local jail while the border authorities contacted law enforcement from his hometown in Xinjiang. He was the only Uighur in a room of 34. On the ninth day of his incarceration, the police squad from Xinjiang arrived. They cuffed Iman tightly and transported him to the train station. “Are the handcuffs necessary?” Iman asked. “Don’t ask questions,” one officer demanded. “We are being lenient — you are supposed to be shackled, too.”

An officer took his photograph, measured his height and weight, and told him to strip down to his underwear. They also shaved his head. Less than two weeks before, Iman was an aspiring graduate at one of the top research universities in the United States. Now, he was a prisoner in an extrajudicial detention center.

Still in his underwear, Iman was assigned to a room with 19 other Uighur men. Upon entering the quarters, lit by a single light bulb, a guard issued Iman a bright yellow vest. An inmate then offered the young man a pair of shorts. Iman began scanning the cell. The tiled room was equipped with one toilet, a faucet, and one large kang-style platform bedsupa in Uighur — where all of the inmates slept. He was provided with simple eating utensils: a thin metal bowl and a spoon.

The Chinese Communist Party’s approach is radical but one officials will not abandon anytime soon. At a recent security meeting in Kashgar in Xinjiang, a Han Chinese official tolda crowd of Uighurs: “You can’t uproot all the weeds hidden among the crops in the field one by one — you need to spray chemicals to kill them all.”

In case any of you thought minorities in democracies had it bad, this article is a must read. 10% of the population in extra judicial custody?

. .
Is this true?
Read the article. Such behavior was common practice in Soviet Union - when you have one party, an opaque system, no freedom of journalists - you can pretty much get away with anything.

For all our ills and our mutual mistrust, even if we have news channels which are borderline insane - we live in countries where there is at least some kind of accountability and transparency. People take to the streets and express their anguish and anger when a Nirbhaya is raped or a Mashal Khan is lynched. No such luck in China.

.
Another day in China , I'm curious has Any politicians from these regions reached any high political position.

. . .
Even so, China has come a long way in terms of human rights after the Tiananmen massacre. I doubt the figures given in this article. Such practices may exist but not on such a large scale.
Tiananmen square received the kind of global coverage because it was in the Capital. I am sure in the big cities of China there must be some kind of accountability. But the rest if pretty much a black hole - nobody goes in, nobody comes out.

. .
You have a fvckin genocidal mass murderer as your Prime Minister!! So much for "accountability and transparency"!
LOL - I am not a fan of my PM - but calling him a genocidal mass murderer is laughable. He in inept and out of his depth as PM. Speaking of mass murderers, one adorns the Chinese currency. And Modi will not remain PM for ever - in all likelihood, he will be over in 2019.

What massacre? what human rights? The human rights preacher of west colonized you kind over 200 years and treated your ancestors worse than animals, where is your human rights? Oh I forgot you kind were not considered as human by your former colonizer. Even now US are bombing your country with drones at will, what human rights you are talking about here?

US slaughtered over one million your muslim brothers in iraq, and another one million in afghanistan, do you dare to have second opinion? I bet you not. once a slave, always a slave. Now go cry in front of your former colonizing master for China's human rights violation. By the way, we are proud of our Tiananmen massacre, to get rid of those west worshiper and stooge so we can be free of west manipulation like you people are enjoying now.

Classic whataboutery practiced by the communists at least that's inherited from the Soviets.:enjoy:

Honestly, there is nothing to be proud of Tiananmen Massacre. You messed it up and you covered it up, try to type that in WeChat, it's either censored or you'll have someone knocking your door.

As I said, we are proud of it , and it was nothing when comparing to the crimes your former west master committed, treating you brownies worsen than animals over 200 years, slave vending and drug trading.

We messed up? I am happy for that, and that is why we can become second largest economy in the world after that cleanse, without resorting to colonization and robbery like west. What brought to you brownies after following your former colonizing master's guidance over 70 years? The largest toiletless shithole in the world and poorer than africa. Keep enjoying your slum life with occasional pat from west on your filthy head.

Most Chinese dislike the fact that people were killed in the protest and feel sympathy towards those individuals (for being naive) but will agree that it was necessary for society. Initially the leadership was willing to speak to the student representatives in seeking a settlement, later noticed they were not seeking any conciliation but revolution. That was unacceptable. The army didn't take action until the mob lynched soldiers and burned armored vehicles. Even the soldiers didn't want any confrontation.

I have met people that participated in the protest who later went to America. Many of them and their kids would agree that the crackdown was necessary for Chinese society. Some higher up student reps acquired American visas before the incident got heated, can't have their feet in two boats at once.

Chinese generally separate personal emotion from the bigger picture and the macro society. It is due to history and organisational culture. Individually Chinese are very nice people and quite accepting but society requires the consideration of more interests and on a much longer time scale.

Any right minded Pakistani will support China 100% in it's quest to sort out those who use Islam, those who profiteer from it, those who are purveyors of extremist hate and want to recreate another religious hell hole like Saudia Arabia. China must oppose such salafi/wahabi influence and take all steps neccessary to purge the mullah's afflicted with disease of obscurantism. China must secularise and enfore a neutral environment where athiests, Muslims, secularists all can live in peace and harmony.

In advancing the noble goal of eradicating profiteering mullahs China must use all means at it's disposal. Show no mercy. I would also ask China to help it's "ironclad friend" eradicate similar scum inside Pakistan by at least purging the mullah class and preventing the use of religion as a opiate of the masses. We stand by China in it's fight against Islamic obscurantism and those who use primitive concepts to hold down progress. All power to the CCP.
