BEIJING: Chinese leaders yesterday emphasised the country's Islamic heritage and Silk Route legacy to enhance its ties with the Arab world as a four-day China Arab States Expo opened in Yinchuan city yesterday.

About 7,000 Arab leaders and businessmen attended the expo and conferences held on its sidelines.

China also used the opportunity to push for a bigger role in fixing prices of oil.

"We should also step up dialogue in the energy area and play a bigger role in stabilising international energy prices and ensuring energy supply safety," the country's top political adviser Yu Zhengsheng said at the inauguration ceremony.

The expo is actually a series of programmes pushing for collaboration between China and the Arab world in a range of areas including cultural co-operation, a World Muslim Travel Business Congress, publishing, tourism, business connectivity between small and medium enterprises and a China-Arab States agricultural co-operation summit.

This is besides match-making meetings and conferences for major companies in energy, finance and industrial goods sectors.

A band of Hui Muslim dancers also performed at the inauguration.

The four-day festival reflects China's desire to connect its vast Muslim community with the Arab world.

Visitors and delegates are also being encouraged to visit mosques in Yinchuan and other parts of the Ningxia province, where the city is located.

Meanwhile, Chinese officials held talks with opposition leaders from Syria on Friday and received King Abdullah II of Jordan on Saturday.

Chinese experts claimed in discussions over state television that the new moves showed Beijing was closely connected with different sections of the Arab world, and was playing an important role in the Muslim world.

One of the lesser known aspects of China is that it has an Islamic history dating back several centuries, and Hui Muslims are spread across several Chinese provinces including Ningxia and Gansu. China has also Kazakh, Uzbek and Tibetan Muslims besides the Uyghurs in Xinjiang region.

Beijing wants to connect the peace-loving Hui community with the Arab world and remains undeterred by riots and violent attacks by separatist sections Uyghurs of Xinjiang region.

Plans include establishing a Hui Merchants Chamber of Commerce to connect with the Muslim world.

The expo and conference saw 100 business executives from Arab countries discussing different aspects of co-operation with Chinese businessmen in areas like textiles, cashmere, Muslim products, photovoltaic and new energy industries, e-commerce and logistics.

Silk Road in Sky: China-UAE new bridge takes shape

China will grant third, fourth and fifth freedom traffic rights between Yinchuan Hedong International Airport and destinations in UAE.

DUBAI - A Silk Road in the Sky linking eastern and western Asia is taking shape and is set to shorten the distance between China and the UAE, providing new development opportunities for Arabian countries.

Following recent talks over bilateral air transport, the UAE and China recently announced in Yinchuan, a city in western China, that China will grant third, fourth and fifth freedom traffic rights between Yinchuan Hedong International Airport and destinations in the UAE and will allow Emirates Airlines to operate four Dubai-Yinchuan-Zhengzhou flights every week.

A spokesperson for the department of commerce of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region said: "Granting freedom traffic rights and approving new routes pave the way for operating new routes linking Yinchuan with other Arabian countries and Muslim regions. The Silk Road in the Sky is becoming a reality."

In fact, the opening up of the Silk Road in the Sky dates back to two years ago. On May 11, 2011, Yinchuan-Kunming-Dubai scheduled passenger and cargo flights, the first international flights to and from Ningxia, commenced service.

This took place one year after the first Arab States Expo was held in Ningxia. Taking place on the eve of the convening of the 2013 Arab States Expo, China's granting of the fifth freedom traffic rights between Yinchuan Hedong International Airport and the UAE means that Ningxia is on track to become a major transshipment port between China and the Mideast.

The granting also means that after flying from Dubai to Yinchuan and loading and unloading passengers and cargo, aircraft from Emirates Airlines can fly on to other countries.

"The Silk Road in the Sky serves as a new bridge between China and the Arab States. We will take Yinchuan Hedong International Airport's granting of freedom traffic rights as an opportunity to allow more Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian countries to open up flights via Yinchuan, promoting the establishment of an airline network with Yinchuan as the hub and moving toward the goal of transforming the airport into an important portal," said a spokesperson for the department of commerce and port office of Ningxia.

The meeting, attended by the Civil Aviation Administration of China and Chinese major airlines as well as the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority and several UAE-based airlines including Emirates, was highly valued by both China and the UAE.

We need a "stupid" subforum where stupid posts like this can be moved and archived, and certain members should only be allowed to post in that forum.

Arabs and Chinese enjoy historical relations..Good to see the relations being revived.

Businesses, trade, commerce etc will have great benefits for both people....

Iran, Pakistan, Arabs, Egypt, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, India etc should have great emphasis on trade and commerce among themselves...No point in fighting among ourselves while remaining slaves to the West...

China, being the free, open society that it is is a perfect place for a religion like Islam to thrive.:omghaha:
