Oppo has filed a patent for a bezel-less display

By: Andrei Klein | geeksays.com | Posted: 23 Mar 2015, 09:56

The Chinese manufacturer Oppo is well-known for taking the design of their devices to a new level, by introducing amazingly slim smartphones, fact revealed by the latest rumors regarding the Oppo R7. Still, they’re planning to take things to a whole new level, by introducing a bezel-less display.

Less bezel, more fun

According to GSM Arena, who posted an exclusive leak with a patent filed by Oppo, the manufacturer might have found the perfect way of creating a true edge-to-edge display. But the thing is that this so-called bezel-less display will actually have bezels, but slimmed down in such way that they will look as they are not there.

The same source mentions that the technology which will be used by Oppo implies covering the regular rectangular display with a panel featuring a “special light guide structure”, which will create the no-bezel effect.

Not just for flagships

If right now curved displays are the latest trend, as most important manufacturers are looking forward to developing handsets with such technology, if Oppo manages to bring this new type of display into production, a lot more phones, not just flagships, could feature it.

An affordable display with a bezel-less display wouldn’t be that bad, right? Still, Oppo’s technology is currently under development and we need to wait for a few more months in order to see how the process went.

Any first thoughts about this? For how many of you is the size of the bezels an important aspect in a smartphone? Share your thoughts about this idea in the comments section below.

According to Haier, they pioneered the concept of Bottom Mounted refrigerators in India, way back in 2006, when the company introduced the first range of BMRs with the less frequently used freezer at the bottom and more frequently used refrigerator section on the top. Since then the brand has constantly innovated and improvised on the concept to bring in value for its much cherished customers. Haier launched its campaign “Jhukna Mat” to re-inforce their belief to eliminate the need to bend unnecessarily to access the more frequently used items in the refrigerator. The latest line-up of the new BMRs introduced last year with best in class features and stunning looks was yet another step towards Haier’s commitment to create solutions that suit the needs of modern Indian contemporary families.

The new Haier Bottom Mounted refrigerator is a revolutionary product which caters to modern households, meticulously designed considering the Indian requirements and usage of the refrigerator and freezer compartments. The refrigerator line-up features 1HIT (One Hour Icing Technology) which makes them one of the fastest cooling refrigerators in the industry. By virtue of its design, consumers can enjoy increased storage space for vegetables in the refrigerator and added features of 1 Touch control LED display, inverter Compressor technology, foldable glass shelves, etc. that make the new Haier Bottom Mounted Refrigerators (BMR) a perfect product to cater to all needs of the i-age Indians.

Just a few hours ago, we received an exclusive tip about Oppo's new display technology which visually eliminated the display bezel. It does so by the use of clever light diffraction, which makes it seems like the display panel extends further sideways than it actually does.:hitwall::enjoy:

The information we received earlier was of a filed patent and today we found a couple of live photos that seems to show the clever new display technology in an actual device. Now, as far as we can tell, the two shots look real enough and the promised visual effect is definitely there. The accompanying text talks about a 5.5-inch screen size and also mentions that the technology is similar the one used in the Sharp Aquos Crystal.

Looking closer at the first shot, the one in "mid-swipe", it does seem that the numbers and symbols are slightly distorted once they reach the edge of the display, where the illusion takes place. This might simply be due to the change in surface angle or maybe the photo is slightly out of focus. There are some concerns around the technology and how it affects image quality and clarity toward the edges, but it is too early to comment on the matter and the photos are not really enough to go by.

Hopefully, the new technology will allow the manufacturing of edge-to edge screen devices in a cost-efficient manner, so we can see such screens on mid-rangers and even budget phones in the future. As we mentioned in the previous article, the patent is already granted and should be available online within three to six months, so it would be fair to assume, that we might start seeing it employed in actual devices after that.

The unit in both photos looks pretty generic and mostly resembles the Oppo R5, as far as the company's current lineup goes. This, of course, might simply be a coincidence, but it could also signify that the R-lineup will be the first to receive a model with the new screen technology.

Dong Mingzhu, president and chairwoman of China's leading air conditioner manufacturer Gree Electric Appliances, said the company is set to develop Taiwan's smart home appliances market and will not get into a price war, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Commercial Times.

Japanese brands are widely trusted by consumers in Taiwan, who have little knowledge or even negative opinions of Chinese-branded products, Dong said in an interview on March 10 during the annual meetings of China's parliament and political advisory body in Beijing.

In 2014, Gree achieved sales revenue of 140 billion yuan (US$22.3 billion), hitting company projections. According to the China Household Electrical Appliances Association (CHEAA), Gree accounted for 33% of global sales of household air conditioners, including 85% own-brand products and 15% OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) orders for Daikin of Japan, Electrolux of Sweden and others.

As China has been developing smart home appliances over the past few years, Gree hopes to explore the smart home business in Taiwan as well. The company is seeking partnerships with Taiwanese companies in trading and technological collaboration.

Gree has six research centers in China. There should not be a bottom line for research and development for a company to stay competitive. Gree has no limit when it comes to innovation and global talent, she said.

Quick question..Is whole house/apartment air conditioning not standard in all the new construction in say the last two decades? Are people in older homes the one's buying Grees or do basically people have to do A/C themselves. I figured the days of looking at a building and seeing rows of A/C units sticking out of windows or being inside and seeing a long rectangular box hanging on the top of a wall were over.

In Taiwan, all the places I lived had their own individual in-door air conditioning. New official buildings, however, (schools etc) have in-built entire air-conditioning.

I think seriously just too many players are coming in handsets. I actually admire the CEO of Gree, Dong Mingzhu. A feisty lady. She actually had an open challenge with Lei Jun, which she lost. Now she is also entering Mobile space.

Recently, Huawei consumer section CEO, Richard Yu, mocked Gree on his we chat account.

He says, "it is insane that everyone, whether air conditioner makers or English teachers, seems to be able to produce mobile phones. However, professional endeavors should be left to professionals"

I fear it will create a bubble. Too much competition is not good sometimes. It is so apparent to me that she will fail. Why not branch out into other things like Smart housing stuff, better air conditioner, something different?

Actually this is the problem with Chinese internet space in general. There are way too many firms in some sectors, leaving other crucial and high growth sectors completely free.

Every one is trying to launch their whole eco-system, like Xiaomi, Alibaba, Oppo, Tencent etc. All are competing with each other in every field, which will eventually make their investments void.

Companies should rather consolidate their own markets, and try fields like pharmaceuticals and chemicals where China is weak. (not the raw amount of chemicals, but domestic brands, research and patents)

1,I am too familiar with those fields where you thought China is weak at...Some country's generic drug industry is nothing to be proud of. Don't make assumptions, that's a typical mistake you are making everyday.
2.China is the first and most innovative in any white goods. Investments in cellphone doesn't mean less investments and less creation in their own fields.
3. Too much competition? That's the first time I heard of. Competitions will make China more competitive in IT and failures are part of them. "Too" many companies in one field means a bubble? In that case, the bubble in some countries is just too gigantic.
