China's 'gift' of Z-10 helicopters to Pakistan raises suspicion

My guess is that this gift is a subtle indicator from China towards Pakistan who is batting its eyelashes towards Russia and Turkey.

Agreed! But then Chinese craft is the least tested weapon system. It could be this reason that the article quotes. China wants to see how it performs in actual battle.

.
If it is untested low powered attack helicopter then why the Indians so worried ? May be because it will became potent defense attack helicopter with Pakistan Army. Hopefully Pakistan's feedback will enhance the performance of this attack helicopter. We need 40+ Z-10. Pakistan also operates JF-17 which was also a new and untested fighter.

.
I say keep these 3 and 3 from turkey (both free). Then based on tests and how they're helpful (including maintainance etc), decide to buy from whichever country offers best deal.

We can buy 25 attack helicopters each from Turkey and China.

. .
What kind of whacky tobaccy you smoke, i need some of that.
Mr I was shocked to hear that too but just before 1965 and for next few decades many things came for free.

The Chinese are taking these new toys and turning them into battle hardened choppers. How do you do that? You deploy it to a war zone. Its like killing two birds with one stone, you test your machine in a real war zone and find out how bad it performs and do updates.

Second, you get the PA used to operating your machine for free. Then you come up with updates based on PA's input and turn this machine into a battle proven weapons system. You then sell it back to Pakistan as they've gotten used to it. A better price tag with tot goes a LONG way. And you've effectively killed your competition.

China was a isolated communist state when it gave freebies to Pakistan. Now I think they offer deep discounts but no freebies. These three Z-10 are like samples at best.

. .
One has to admire pakistani establishment when it comes to procurement. AH1's came free of cost from EDA account, now these chinese helicopters, again for free.... It's no short of being brilliant.

No I disagree.
Delaying the procurement of equipment, lack of which is causing more and more deaths of soldiers everyday, just to get some freebies, whose cost would anyways be recompensed by China at a future date is not prudent IMHO.

Imagine the circus Indian media would have created had India been in similar situation.
Even a person like me with no artistic flair can come up with headlines like " India forced to rely on Chinese alms for its security" and such.

But then again, human lives are cheap in this part of the world, though India is improving fast, as seen in Italian marines case.

So essentially China is using PA aviation as test dummies while PA get free helicopters, three of them.
All while delaying the actual purchase.
I guess it can be seen as win-win.

not a reliable news. If true the gift wwill be appreciated

China's Z-10 attack helicopter. (Internet photo)

China's reported decision to present Pakistan three Z-10 attack helicopters as a "gift" this year has raised suspicions of ulterior motives, says Duowei News, a US-based Chinese political news outlet.

Citing unconfirmed Russian media reports, Duowei claims that although Pakistan had shown an interest purchasing the Z-10s, which are designed by Russia's Kamov Design Bureau under contract from Beijing, China decided to give the helicopters to its "closest friend" for free.

The Z-10s, designed primarily for anti-tank missions with secondary air-to-air capabilities, will reportedly be added to the Pakistan Army aviation fleet and be deployed in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the country. The helicopter is said to be capable of targeting the enemy in the air or on the ground with a range of 3-4 kilometers without appearing on radar.

Some military experts have cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Z-10 on counterterrorism operations, saying that its WZ-9 operation engine has relatively low power as well as a smaller payload and weaker defensive capabilities in comparison to other attack helicopters.

Even if the reports of the gift are true, Duowei said, the new Z-10 helicopters will only enhance Pakistan's position against India, which is about to pair its domestically produced light combat helicopters with newly imported AH-64 Apache attack helicopters manufactured by Boeing. Though there is still a sizable gap between the power systems of Z-10s and Apaches, the Chinese aircraft's body design and weapon system configurations are comparable to the world's most advanced attack helicopters, especially because of the excellent performance of its TY-90 air-to-air missiles.

For China, the "gift" to Pakistan could serve as a gift for the givers as well, as it might allow the PLA to see how the Z-10s perform in actual combat situations, providing valuable data for further research and development, Duowei said. China may have already been collecting information on its domestically produced weaponry acquired by Pakistan in recent years, including the MBT-3000 tank, the JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft and the F-22P general purpose frigate. The decision to make the Z-10s a gift instead of selling them could therefore stem from Pakistan's limited defense budget and China's relatively robust arms industry, Duowei added.

They have their own procurement plan like f22p's, Jf17's, F16's for which they pay, but then they also have a flair in getting some stuff for free. that needs some heavy duty statecraft, especially when tier coffers are tight.

I have a firm belief that nothing in life is free except maybe parents love.

Of course there can be win-win scenarios but this IMHO is not.
Not unless you think human lives are disposable.

well this comment is coming form a person who's country has received more then $31 billion 'aid' in just 18 years (1990-2008) and $ 2.63 billion aid further received in next 4 years i.e. 2008-2012 BTW that amount is almost more than the half of Pakistan Total Foreign Debts .... ignorance is blessing

India, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria are aid receivers, understandable. Are they top 5 aid receivers from foreign donors? Or just top 5 from UK?
