China's Expanding Submarine Fleet

^ There's no basis to those statements.

Chinese subs already penetrated SOSUS and now patrol around Guam or even further east across Pacific. US has already been spooked many times by PLAN nuclear subs making their presence known in unexpected ways.
Penetrated? Say what?

SOSUS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the ending of the Cold War in the 1990s, the immediate need for SOSUS decreased, and the focus of the US Navy also turned toward a system that was deployable on a theatre basis. The SOSUS components are now used for scientific projects, such as tracking the vocalisations of whales and other ocean mammals in various study projects, as a data network for undersea instrumentation packages, and for acoustic thermometry. The SOSUS system was declassified in 1991, although by that time it had long been an open secret.
Please stop exaggerating...:D

The sosus networks are not what they used to be. only a few are actually active now.
At least this 'penetration' give them something to crow over. Good for domestic propaganda.

Even if Chinese subs did this, how the hell did you find this out? Did you find that out last night before you wake up.

Its time for you to wake up and deal with facts. The only know encounter between China and US is when a Chinese sub pop up about 5 miles away from USS Kittyhawk several years back. Everything else is speculation at best.

i am always curious how the people get to estimate the noise level of an unknown sub or even one on paper.

There is no way to tell actually. So its useless to speculate until the facts are released. I'm certain that US will be alarmed if China can make quiet subs, the pentagon will make some noise about how the USN must counter the new Chinese threat and we'll all know. Until then, there is nothing to make a big deal over.

most likely they base it on where China is getting it's submarine tech, Which in this case is Russia.

I think the Nerpa class(shchuka-B) can be comparable to the Los Angeles class of submarines. I really liked the Borei and its predecessor Typhoon(Akula)class.

I believe that China should develop a sub that is comparable to a Los Angeles Class SSN before comparing with a Virginia class sub.
That is already done by Type 093. China is beyond LA class level now and getting to Seawolf / Viriginia level.

Of course, USN is good, very good. There is a reason why they are bringing all the Virginia and Seawolf SSNs to western Pacific. LA subs are simply not good enough anymore.

The sosus networks are not what they used to be. only a few are actually active now.

SOSUS The "Secret Weapon" of Undersea Surveillance
Now, now.... is that pretend ignorance... or real ignorance? We are not talking about the GIUK SOSUS but the Ryukyu Islands one.

On December 31, Sankei Shimbun, one of Japan's five national newspapers, revealed that in February 2009, a Chinese nuclear sub crossed the so-called First Island Chain in waters near Taiwan. The term “First Island Chain” describes a maritime line which runs roughly between Korea and Japan's western coasts, through the Taiwan Strait along the northern half of the Philippines, and ending at the Indonesian island of Sumatra. To the US and its allies, any action by the Chinese navy beyond the First Island Chain symbolizes that Beijing is expanding its geographic limits or boundaries in terms of its military's operations.

The 2009 incident resembles one in November 2004, when a P-3Cs of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces discovered a Han-class nuclear-powered submarine sneaking southwest of Ishigaki, an island belonging to the Okinawa Prefecture. That prompted the then-Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to bring into force a marine guard action directive to follow the sub. Together with the US, the Japanese subsequently monitored the Chinese sub making a cruise around Guam, a US key military hub, after which it sailed back to its mother port Jianggezhuang, a Chinese naval base 24 km east of Qingdao in the Yellow Sea. But while the 2004 incident led to considerable media coverage, the 2009 break through the First Island Chain was not detected by the Taiwanese.

Although the US has responded to the rapid development of the Chinese submarine fleet by deploying the ocean surveillance ships USNS Victorious and USNS Impeccable, which monitor the seas with low-frequency sonar arrays and The Japanese self-defense forces have also strengthened surveillance with their 100 P-3Cs, both the 2004 and 2009 incidents make it obvious that US and Japan have been gradually losing the ability to fully monitor Chinese subs' movements.
