All Acoustic Equipment of the 10,000-Meter Manned Submersible Made in China----Chinese Academy of Sciences
Editor: LI Yuan | Nov 30, 2020

The first full-depth deep-sea manned submersible of China, Fendouzhe, successfully completed all sea trial tasks and returned to Sanya port on Nov. 28. It successfully landed on the deepest point of the world, Mariana Trench, at 8:12 am on Nov. 10, reaching the depth of 10,909 meters and setting a new record of Chinese manned deep-diving.

"Dear audience, 10,000-meter sea floor is pretty wonderful beyond words. We hope we could show you sceneries under 10000-meter sea through the eyes of Fendouzhe!" Three Fendouzhe divers shared their feelings at the first moment through the underwater acoustic communication system with the audience around the world.

The manned submersible Fendouzhe is a major deep-sea scientific and technological equipment specially supported by the National Key Research and Development Program of China since 2016. The Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS) is responsible for its acoustic technology and equipment.

The IACAS has accomplished the independent research and development of Fendouzhe's acoustic system, including the deep-water acoustic communication modem, the topography detection sonar, the multibeam forward looking sonar, the Doppler velocity log and the obstacle avoidance sonar, as well as the system integration of the positioning sonar and the inertial navigation equipment.

Compared with the two previous manned submersibles of Jiaolong and Shenhai Yongshi, the acoustic system of Fendouzhe has reached higher technical indicators, and breaks through the full-depth difficulty with full-domestic production. It has performed well in the whole sea trial process of Fendouzhe, providing reliable technical support for the continuous cruise operation under the full-depth deep-sea.

In the acoustic system, underwater acoustic communication is the only bridge between Fendouzhe and its mother ship Exploration-I, and it has realized the real-time transmission of text, voice, and image from the 10,000-meter seabed to the mother ship.

The integrated navigation system, which consists of the Doppler velocity log, the positioning sonar, and the inertial navigation equipment, provides high-precision underwater positioning and navigation for the cruising operation of Fendouzhe.

In the diving operation on Nov. 16, with the help of the integrated navigation system and sonar equipment, the divers of Fendouzhe successfully retrieved three underwater samplers, earlier placed on the 10,000-meter seabed, in only half an hour, making the saying "search for a needle in the sea" into reality. Moreover, the sampling image was transmitted back to the mother ship through the underwater acoustic communication modem.

Five researchers from the Ocean Acoustic Technology Center of IACAS have participated in the sea trial of Fendouzhe recently. Two of them are divers in many deep-diving tasks and guaranteed the reliable operations of the submersible and its acoustic system.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- A deep sea sci-tech lab has been established to boost the development of an innovative system of key technologies in related fields, according to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

Located in the city of Wuxi, east China's Jiangsu Province, the sci-tech lab named "Taihu" has been built by the CSSC-affiliated China Ship Scientific Research Center, the CSSC said.

The research center aims to build the deep sea sci-tech lab into an advanced laboratory with global influence.

By 2025, the lab plans to gather around 4,000 talents to work on such tasks as deep-sea diving, deep-sea communication and navigation, and deep ocean survey.

The lab is also gearing up to construct an integrated key technological innovation system, which will include basic research, tech-innovation and industrial application.

China Ship Scientific Research Center is the country's largest ship and ocean engineering research institute, which focuses on the research of ship hydrodynamic performance, propulsion, high-performance ships, underwater engineering, and related sci-tech issues.

China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and the Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Unmanned System signed on Saturday a contract to build China's largest comprehensive maritime scientific research ship in Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong Province, in a move seen as further boosting the country's marine exploration capability in regions including the South China Sea.

According to Chinanews.com, the new ship, designed to be 117.2 meters long, 21 meters wide, and 5.4 meters of draft, is a comprehensive maritime scientific research vessel with an optimal performance, as well as a record displacement of more than 10,100 tons..

The ship will also meet the requirements of a strengthened B-level ice zone, use full electric drive, DP2 dynamic positioning system, and be equipped with a 360 degree full-view cab.

The vessel will feature scientific exploration equipment and supporting operation equipment such as multi-beam, single-beam, thermohaline and depth sounder, and there will also be reserve space and interfaces for more scientific research equipment.

The construction of the vessel will not only enable multi-disciplinary marine scientific investigations to be conducted, but also will meet the needs of expanding China's future marine scientific investigations.

China has around 60 commissioned scientific research ships such as the Xuelong-2 icebreaker and Shiyan-6, a modern vessel that is focused on geophysical exploration and seismic acquisition and processing.

CHANGSHA, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have completed a deep-sea drilling project to obtain a sediment core with a length of 231 meters from a depth of over 2,000 meters in the South China Sea, setting a new world record for deep-sea drilling.

Aboard a marine research vessel, China's independently developed drilling system "Sea Bull II" took approximately 15 hours to drill the sediment on the seabed 2,060 meters under the sea on Wednesday.

The system, weighing 12 tonnes, is currently China's heaviest piece of underwater geological exploration equipment. As the world's only seabed drilling apparatus with a drilling capacity of more than 200 meters, it can help explore natural gas hydrate resources in the seabed.

The system was developed by professor Wan Buyan and his team at the Hunan University of Science and Technology.

Wan said that in the next few years, his team will attempt to drill sediment at a depth of 11,000 meters in the Mariana Trench to research the evolution of the trench's ecosystems.

Researchers design high-performance catalyst for seawater batteries
Source: Xinhua| 2021-05-18 14:34:16|Editor: huaxia

BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese researchers from Tianjin University have designed a high-performance catalyst for seawater batteries operating in deep-sea and lean-oxygen environments.

A constant energy supply with a self-powered energy conversion device is crucial for the exploration of extreme deep-sea environments.

The use of dissolved-oxygen seawater batteries, which generate electricity by reducing dissolved oxygen, is promising, though their performance is limited by the ultralow oxygen concentration in deep-sea environments.

The researchers reported a microwave-assisted heating method and achieved the ultrafast synthesis of a high-activity catalyst with a strong oxygenophilic interface.

They tested the high-efficiency oxygen reduction and catalysis mechanism in a lean-oxygen environment, and established that the catalyst can work stably with the seawater batteries in ultralow oxygen conditions.

The research was published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials. The results suggested oxygenophilic catalysts have a critical role in the operation of seawater batteries in lean-oxygen conditions.
