China's Auto Makers Foton, Great Wall to Enter India

NEW DELHI—Two of China's biggest auto makers plan to sell their vehicles in India, a move which will likely allow them to diversify into this potential growth region for automobiles amid slowing sales in their home market.

Beiqi Foton Motor Co. acquired a plot of land in western India's Maharashtra state to build a commercial-vehicle factory, an Indian auto-industry executive said Monday.

Sugato Sen, deputy director-general of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, said that Chinese auto maker—Great Wall Motors Co.— also is considering a plan to enter the Indian auto market.

Great Wall is looking at locations in three states—Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra—to build a factory, Mr. Sen said. Great Wall aims to introduce its first vehicle in India during the financial year that starts April 1, 2015, he added. "India has big potential and this is what has attracted China," he said.

Great Wall met with SIAM officials last week, Mr. Sen said.

An executive at Great Wall said the company is working on a plan to enter the Indian market, but declined to elaborate.

Executives at Foton couldn't be reached for comment. The company has set a goal of having an industrial presence in five countries in the world, including India, by 2020, according to its website.

A foray into India will enable Foton and Great Wall tap into a market that is currently in the midst of a slowdown, but is expected to become one of the biggest markets globally by the turn of this decade. The two will face competition from companies such as Tata Motors Ltd.,Volvo AB,Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.,Hyundai Motor Co and Ford Motor Co.,which already have factories in India.

Sales in China—the world's biggest automobile market—have decelerated sharply and are expected to grow between 5% and 8% annually over the next decade, according to JP Morgan. China's automobile sales growth slipped to 2.5% in 2011, the firm said.

Foton produces commercial vehicles including trucks, dumpers and buses. It also manufactures vans and sport-utility vehicles. It has a joint venture with Daimler to make commercial vehicles.

Great Wall, a maker of SUVs and pickup trucks, has an annual production capacity of 800,000 vehicles, according to its website.

Sales of trucks and buses have remained subdued in India this year, mainly because of a slowing economy, high borrowing costs and rising fuel prices. Sales grew a marginal 2.7% from the year earlier in the first eight months of the current fiscal year.

Analysts and auto makers however expect commercial vehicle sales in India to grow faster in the coming years, as the country remains one of the fastest-growing major economies globally, and as it invests to improve its inadequate infrastructure.

SUVs are also gaining popularity in India because of growing affluence of customers and increasing demand for off-road travel. The segment has been largely insulated from the recent slowdown in local vehicle sales, which was caused by higher loan rates and fuel prices.

Local sales of SUVs surged 62% during April to November, compared with a 1.3% gain in car sales.

Mr. Sen of SIAM said the Chinese companies are planning to operate in India through wholly owned units.

Tata owned Jaguar setting plant in Shanghai, two Chinese companies coming to India. Good development. Hope they employ local workers, not bring their own.

Hope a positive competition sees major improvement in Indian auto-sector.

What do you want us to say? We are not Bangladeshis to speak against foreign investment, doesn't matter what country it comes from.

If they set up a plant in India, its good for Indian economy.

Well, U guys do look down chinese products and some members even said that Indian cars are now comparable to American & japanese cars :lol:, which is fine from a nationalistic sense. DO U think the chinese will get market in India. The whole world views chinese & indian cars as of the same quality.

And as for speaking against Indian investment, India being 30 times bigger than BD in territory, 17 digger in economy, has hostile intent, supports a terrorist organization BAL, historically have treated us unfairly, propagates against BD, Majority Indians are anti-islamic bigots , U can not blame us for speaking against Indian "investment". We are not S.korea yet to fend off against an Indian economic aggression. ( This part of my post is irrelevant to this thread, I know. Please no need to reply and spoil the thread. This was only meant for roybot) :)

Doesn't matter,If they can't sell they will leave.Like many other companies did.India is gonna be 2nd largest auto market by 2015 and every body want a piece of that pie.

Kindly give what's the common notions of these particular car manufacturers in China ? I mean in terms of product quality, services and maintenance. What's general ranking of these companies in China ?

You need to broaden your horizon, and think about the bigger picture. Chinese automobile plant in India will not be Indian market specific, it can cater to other south asian, african, middle east markets too. Just like today, Indian made Hyundais, Suzukis, Nissans, Volkswagens, BMWs, Mercs are being exported the world over. This will provide jobs to Indian youth, and increase our exports, hence good for Indian economy.

The labour cost is rising in China, and add transportation cost on top of that, it makes India a lucrative manufacturing hub.

And again its not for us to decide whether people will buy Chinese motor vehicles or not, if an Indian consumer finds a Chinese product good value for money, he/she should go for it, its their money after all.

Both Chinese and Indian automobile companies are investing heavily in R&D, and not to forget the slew of take overs done by companies like Cherrys, Tatas and Mahindras. The quality can only go up from here.

Few things must be considered.
a) India already has many brand cars, Japanese, Korean, American, Brits, German and Indian, Chinese car will have tough competition.
b) No one oppose Chinese car manufacturer, we abuse Smuggled Chinies maal which evade tax.
c) Off course chinese cars can get some market share, They can focus on pricing...
d) Chinese products are cheaper than Indian products, infact chinese products (not made in china) are cheaper (not in economic term)
