They are pleasant looking vehicles. The Indian car buying consumer is usually buying his first car and in all probability has a large family. It is not drive-ability which is the clinching factor in the Indian consumer's mind. The Indian consumer cares about 3 things -

1. Fuel economy
2. Re-sale value
3. Cheap and reliable and quick After Sales Service.

That's the reason why Suzuki has something ridiculous like a 40% market share in India. You can check all 3 boxes for Suzuki. Hyundai is a distant second and Tata with its notoriously bad After-Sales Service is usually 3rd although Mahindra has recently outsold Tata.

Car makers like Honda, Toyota, VW (along with Skoda), Fiat and Chevrolet have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at these guys to no avail. I wonder what Fiat makes of it as almost 60% of diesel cars sold in India are sold with a Fiat engine - that's what Suzuki and Tata use.

For a Chinese car maker, it is going to be a difficult market to crack.

To the Bangladeshi guy talking about setting up Bangladesh or Sri Lanka as an auto hub - are you high?

The reason so many automakers set up shop in India is not just cost of labor, but it is the availability of suppliers. Car manufacturers outsource all sorts of parts which go into cars - glasses, jacks, tyres, plastic, airbags, locks, nuts, latches, bolts, steerings, bulbs, fog lights - and India has the secondary industries to supply these - Bangladesh and Sri Lanka don't. None of these have mushroomed overnight either.

MSRTC is traditionally a volvo customer, so Mercedes, Kinglong, Hino they all gave 2 buses each free so that MSRTC can use it and select their buses in future. However Kinglong caught fire on Mumbai-Pune expressway. It was the presence of mind of the (lady) conductor due to which all passengers and driver escaped unhurt.

Immidiately the next day MSRTC decommissioned these buses and asked King Long to take back.

Not to mention the troubles BEST has got after inducting King Long buses in their fleet. Unfortunately BEST bought over 200 king long buses and with no other alternative as of now, they are still forced to use it.

The bus can't climb a flyover unless you switch of the (factory fitted) A/C. 90% times the A/C is not working, if it is working only hot air is coming out. Everyday at least 2 buses are breaking down on roads. Sometimes people can't seat on last seats as the rear engine gets so hot that despite of the so called A/C people are fried. People are turning back to normal buses made by Ashok Leyland or TATA. Or there are certain routes where you have alternative of NMMT (Volvo) and TMT (TATA) A/C buses.

I read that that was a scam too. The King Long buses were made by some outfit in Punjab and only some parts of it were supplied by China.

I think they might be very popular in India, quality is comparable to Japanese only 40 per cent cheaper. In Aust these have overtaken like a forest fire.

wtf did BEST buy chinese buses ? chinese goods already have a lousy reputation in India ...how did the clear the technical round of the RFP ? Its easy to assume they were L1 as they are cheap.

The whole thing is rather quite funny ....if it wasn't so tragic.

BEST wanted CNG buses. It was only King Long then as far as CNG A/C Buses are concerned. King Long came with cheap price, paid right people and initially the 2 trial buses were found very good on normal roads. These buses then were running with Ashok Leyland Diesel A/C buses.

So they bought few. Ashok Leyland came up with their CNG A/C bus but BEST was already in problems with Ashok Leyland supplied normal non A/C CNG buses under JNNURM.

Ashok Leyland was giving them hard time in spares and services. TATA came with Hybrid and Volvo with fully diesel so BEST decided to stick to King Long and purchased more.

Now the real game begun. They introcuded these buses on office routes under express designation. People left their cars at home and skipped local trains to travel by a relatively cheaper A/C buses and by then BEST started realizing the problems it was too late. They had already purchased 270+.
