China says it is willing to set the stage for mediation between Myanmar and Bangladesh to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

China has backed its longtime ally Myanmar in the military crackdown against the Rohingyas in Rakhine State after insurgent attacks on security forces on Aug 25.

Bangladesh is “appreciative” of China’s 'One Belt One Road' initiative, believing it will bring “important opportunities” for Bangladesh’s goal of becoming a middle-income country by 2021 and a Developed Country by 2041.

Under the initiative which comprises the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, China is focusing on building a trade and infrastructure network for connecting Asian countries with Europe and Africa along the ancient Silk Road routes.

The aim is to boost development of other countries and their trade with China.

With these on the backdrop, China is also helping Bangladesh provide the Rohingya refugees with essentials for temporary resettlement. It has sent relief materials for the Rohingyas.

“The Chinese side is highly concerned about the difficulty facing Bangladesh in resettling the displaced people in the Myanmar-Bangladesh border area," The Hindu quoted Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang as saying during a Sept 30 media briefing, according to bdnews24.

"In order to help the government of Bangladesh with the resettlement efforts, the Chinese government has decided to provide emergency humanitarian supplies to the government of Bangladesh,” it added from Lu Kang's speech.

Referring to Myanmar media reports, The Hindu said China was planning to pitch in $10 billion in an economic zone in Myanmar and set up railway link from the Bay of Bengal to its Yunan Province through Myanmar.

But the situation in Rakhine has put China's efforts in risk.

The Hindu quoted a Chinese expert from the country's media as saying, "Stability in Rakhine State really matters.”

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres during the UN General Assembly last month: “China is willing to continue promoting peace talks in its own way, and hopes the international community can play a constructive role to ease the situation and promote dialogue.”

On Sept 25, Chinese Ambassador in Bangladesh Ma Mingqiang said, “We sincerely hope this issue will be settled as soon as possible and China is willing to play a constructive role to this end."

Mingqiang expressed China’s “heartfelt sympathy” for the refugees in Cox’s Bazar.

“We highly appreciate humanitarian assistance that the Bangladesh government has provided to the large number of refugees coming to Bangladesh,” the ambassador said.

Looks like China wants to play the "Super Power" role in her immediate neighborhood!!! Charity begins at home....

. . . .
This is not an bilateral issue.Bangladesh is not a party of Rohingya problem. This problem is entirely created by myanmar.Bangladesh as a neighboring country became a victim of spillover effect by sheltering those who fled. It may happened to any other country instead of Bangladesh if they shared border with Rakhine state. This is an international humanitarian issue and should be solved by involving UN and other world institution.China should rather utilize their influence over myanmar to persuade them to take back the refugee and implement the Annan commission report.

Any talks with the Burmese monkeys must have UN, ICJ, EU and US involvement.

.
We don't need china as our middleman when china is clearly on burmese side

Lol China is making it sound like Bangladesh was attacking Myanmar, "peace talks" should be between Rohingya leaders & Myanmar. Not the country giving them freaking humanitarian aid.

Chinese logic fails

Why would China do that ? They do not accept Western norms on human rights and religious freedoms. They have been open and clear about it.

China need a stable Rakhine.

China would benefit from stability. They are limits to how much they can tweak Myanmar

Stability in Rakhine can be achieved several ways. If Myanmar wipes out 100% of Rohingya population out of Rakhine it will be stable. I am sure that was not what you had in mind when you mentioned stability.

No.I have thought about that. But stability in Ralhine is not possible even if burma drive out all the Rohingyas for several reason.
1.Cross border attack in Rakhine by the Rohingya fighters. If it become clear that China is behind the Rohingya ethnic cleansing, than Chinese infrastructure may also come under attack by Rohingya or other Islamist group. It will create an environment of uncertainty and fear.
2.Bangladesh will never accept entire Rohingya population resulting from ethnic cleansing so that burma or China or other countries can milk the Rakhine while damaging Bangladesh. There is a possibility of conflict/unrest between Bangladesh and burma in the rakhine border areas.
3.Now the only real insurgency in Rakhine is being done by Rakhine ethnic fighters.Hatred to Rohingya is the only thing which is helping to keep quite the Rakhine population at large.Once the Rohingyas are gone, the Rakhine people will start their separatist battle with new vigor.Rakhine people never accepted burmese rule and will fight until they restore their independent state. So Chinese dream of 'Rohingya free stable Rakhine' is not likely.

If there are no Rohaniyas in Rakhine there are no Rohaniya fighters unless they are operating out of Bangladesh.

It is not China's dream to have Rohingya free stable Rakhine.

If Bangladesh does not want the Rohanigyas on their soil you stop them at the border. That is how the game is played.

Dispute between Rakhine and Myanmar is a different story

Yes they have to get some support from somewhere. Not necessarily from BD.Current ARSA have got no support from Bangladesh.Their leadership came from Rohingya community in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. They trained within Rakhine jungle and then attacked. There are some instance when some Rohingya youth gone back to Rakhine to fight after crossing their family members in Bangladesh. If entire Rohingya people become refugee in Bangladesh then they have nothing to fear about retaliation against their people and can act more freely.Rakhine's mountainous jungle is ideal for guerrilla fighting and a little help from any party they can give sleepless night to burmese security force there.Infiltration is not a problem due to long border and coastline burma have which are mountainous jungle and barely guarded.Even without Rohingya people, there are several million Muslim and Hindu people within Burma who look like Rohingyas. So they can get the camouflage as well.

But the crucial point is, unless burma take back the Rohingya and implement the Annan commission recommendation, this refugee problem will continue decades after decades with bitter relation between Bangladesh and burma and potential to a lot of unforeseen consequences. So, assuming that, once Rohingyas are driven out forcefully, peace and tranquility will reign over Rakhine has no guarranty. It will create another Palestinian refugee like problem.
