BEIJING: China has evinced interest in establishing diplomatic ties with Bhutan as the two countries held 24th round of boundary talks here to resolve their border dispute.

China hopes to work with Bhutan for early establishment of diplomatic relations and solution to boundary issues, Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao on Friday said when the visiting Bhutan's Foreign Minister Damcho Dorji called on him.

Dorji is in China to attend the 24th round of boundary talks.

"China and Bhutan have yet to establish diplomatic ties but have always respected each other and treated each other as equals," state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Li as saying.

Dorji said Bhutan expects to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields and looks forward to settling the boundary issue at an early date, the report said.

China has settled border differences with 12 of the 14 land neighbours with boundary disputes pending with India and Bhutan, which had close relations.

India and China have held 19 round of Special Representatives talks to resolve their bounder disputes.

Strategically placed between India and Tibet, Thimphu remained aloof since 1951 after China took firm control of Tibet, which formed borders with Bhutan.

Relations between Beijing and Thimphu remained traditionally strained following border dispute while the two countries maintained friendly exchanges and contacts in recent years.

In a surprise move in 2012, then Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Bhutanese counterpart Jigmi Y Thinley met on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development at Rio De Janeiro and expressed their willingness to establish diplomatic relations between the two countries and discussed measures to speed up efforts resolve border dispute and to step up bilateral ties

But Thimphu did not pursue the move, apparently, to avoid creating any misunderstanding in its close ties with India.

China and Bhutan, however, continue their exchanges with visits by high level diplomats besides a dialogue to resolve the border dispute.

Doesn't China have border with Bhutan? What I don't understand is why didn't China do it years back? Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, these states can be very useful in order to keep the ambitions of Modi and his RSS terrorists in check. Though very late but China's moves are in the right directions. China never actively sought to contain india and that was a serious mistake.

China pleaded to open an Embassy in Bhutan back in 1994, 2003, 2011 but Bhutan smacked their request every time.
Bhutan will reject China's request this time too.

Bhutan maintains most Diplomatic relations with India and (India funded construction of Bhutanese embassy in Dhaka).

In other development last week Indian Army HQ announced Major General Adheesh Rao as commander of India's permanent military training and security mission to Bhutan.

Currently 11,000 Bhutanese youth are serving in Indian armies and paramilitaries.

@T-Rex In fact Bhutan's PM has publicly kicked out China's request of an Embassy in Bhutan.

India is "Great Britain in South Asia",with a similar British temper.
We really didn't want to get close to it.

Bhutan maintains most diplomatic relations with India because last time when Jigmi Y Thinley shake hand with our PM, India was crying and threaten to cut oil and gaz from Bhutan and prompted their PM to back down. If India is playing this dirty game with China, next we can also cut your water off and make India think twice if it won't comply to our request or demande same way their did to Bhutan.

Sri Lanka's New President is installed by Indian intelligence.
Nepals pro China PM just got kicked out by RAW operation.
Bangladesh PM is extremely pro India.

China doesn't have the balls and any ways Brahmaputra and Indus provides water to 4% of India's population but to 60% of Bangladesh and 80% of Pakistan.
Cutting them off will harm Pakistan and Bangladesh more.

Are you seriously a Bangladeshi?

Weren't you people supposed to be grateful to India who fought for your independence?

He is a supporter of Jaamat e Islami a right wing religious party. It was founded by leaders of a pro Pakistani militia accused of large scale civilian massacres.

But I have found most of the Bangladeshis on this forum to be anti-India. Why is it so?
