MANILA/BEIJING - China called on the Philippines on Wednesday to withdraw a case it has filed at a UN arbitration tribunal over rival claims in the South China Sea and return to bilateral negotiations.

China has for years insisted that disputes with rival claimants to the South China Sea be handled bilaterally.

But this month, its claims came under international legal scrutiny for the first time when the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague began hearing a suit the Philippines filed in 2013.

China has refused to take part in the case.

"I certainly hope so, the Philippine side will sit together with us for a peaceful negotiation," China's ambassador to the Philippines, Zhao Jianhua, told reporters when asked if the Philippines should withdraw its the case in The Hague.

"The negotiation might require patience, might take time but that's the only way out ... peaceful solution through bilateral talks."

This month, a Philippine legal team, including two American lawyers, argued before tribunal that it was the correct venue for resolving disputes covered by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which both states have signed.

The Philippines is seeking to enforce its right to exploit waters in a 200-nautical mile "exclusive economic zone" off its coast, as defined under the convention.

China issued a position paper in December arguing the dispute was not covered by the treaty because it was ultimately a matter of sovereignty, not exploitation rights.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, believed to be rich in energy deposits, where about $5 trillion in ship-borne goods pass every year. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan also have conflicting claims.

China has become increasingly assertive in the South China Sea with rapid reclamation around reefs in the Spratly archipelago in particular sparking concern, both in the region and in the United States.

Separately, China's state media said China hoped to develop renewable energy projects in the sea as part of a series of schemes to also benefit other countries.

China says it needs to carry out its reclamation and building not only for defensive purposes, but also for things like improving navigation as part of international obligations.

The official People's Daily, citing the National Oceanic Administration, said China needed to "further provide high quality public maritime services for countries bordering the South China Sea and the region".

Efforts to protect the environment there could be helped by China working with other nations to develop renewable energy, it added.

The newspaper said China would step up protection of the environment, including a gene bank for maritime species.

The Philippines said in April China's construction had destroyed about 300 acres (1.2 sq km) of coral reef and caused estimated annual losses of $100 million to coastal nations.

Obviously they are now feeling the pressure.

I hope our government is wise enough not to drop the case. This is just another ploy by CCP to pursue 'talks' while continue reclaiming in our EEZ . It says and agree on one thing but do another thing. Bull$shit.

As expected, Chinese PDF members will be up-arms and the Jiangs are preparing their own "imaginary" forces to invade Philippines and exterminated Filipinos! :cheesy:

I guess different opinions doesn't exist in Mainland China.

China hopes that the Philippines will drop its case before the United Nations Tribunal on the Law of the Sea. The Chinese ambassador to Manila issued the statement a day before the deadline for the Philippines to submit written arguments to the U.N. Tribunal in the Netherlands. The ambassador said bilateral talks are still the best option for resolving the maritime dispute. - ANC, The World Tonight, July 22, 2015

PHL rejects China’s call for it to drop arbitration case
July 23, 2015 2:38pm

The Philippines on Thursday rejected a Chinese ambassador’s call for Manila to drop its arbitration case against Beijing aimed at settling the territorial row between the two countries over resource-rich parts of the South China Sea.

At a press briefing, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the Philippines is determine to reach a final ruling on its case against China, filed before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Netherlands.

"Malinaw ang aming layunin na magkaroon ng ruling iyong Permanent Court of Arbitration para mabigyan ng sustansya ang nilalaman ng United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) kung saan signatory ang Pilipinas,” Coloma told reporters in Malacañang.

"Nasa atin din naman ang determinasyon na itaguyod yung pagiging makatwiran ng ating posisyon,” he added.

The Philippines is using the UNCLOS, a treaty signed by over 160 countries, defining nations’ rights to use the world’s oceans, as basis of its arbitration case against China.

China, which uses the so-called “nine-dash line” to assert its claim over the almost the entire South China Sea, has refused to participate in the arbitration proceedings.

'Pursue case to its logical conclusion'

Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose also stood firm on pursuing arbitration proceedings to solve the territorial row between the Philippines and China.

"The Philippines is determined to pursue the arbitration case to its logical conclusion,” Jose said in a separate text message.

On Wednesday, Chinese ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua said he hopes the Philippines will withdraw its arbitration case against China.

The Chinese envoy also once again called on Manila to engage Beijing in bilateral negotiations to address the territorial row.

Coloma however said that the Philippines’ “rules-based” and multilateral approach to settling the dispute remains unchanged.

Japan supports Philippines and commends the Republic of the Philippines in her diplomatic caliber in solving this issue through jurisprudent processes. Japan , the third largest economy in the world, stands with Manila. Rest assured that the Japanese Navy shall help ensure freedom of navigation.

What I long for is Manila's final invitation to Japan to station our fleet in Subic Bay as well as in around Palawan to help defense buildup and training purposes as well as to ensure Safety and Stability in Pilipinas.

@Cossack25A1 buddy when do you think we can expect to see this? Soon I hope ?!
