China has responded to a warning from incoming German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock that authoritarian states like the Asian powerhouse should be reined in.

Baerbock, who is also co-leader of Germany's Green Party told Die Tageszeitung (TAZ)newspaper that import curbs should be used as leverage at the European level, which would be a "big problem" for Beijing.

Her comments signaled a policy change for the next German coalition, led by incoming Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which is expected to take office next week.

What did Baerbock say?
Baerbock argued that Germany's grievances with China should be clearly addressed.

"Eloquent silence is not a form of diplomacy in the long run, even if it has been seen that way by some in recent years," she told TAZ, in an apparent reference to Chancellor Angela Merkel's outgoing government.

"For me, a value-based foreign policy is always an interplay of dialogue and toughness."

The incoming foreign minister said while dialogue is a central component of international politics, "that doesn't mean that you have to gloss over things or keep quiet."

Her comment was a reference to numerous allegations of human rights abuses by China, including the internment of around 1 million Uighur Muslims in the northeastern Xinjiang region.

Baerbock suggested that import curbs implemented by the European Union could be used as a tool to pressure Beijing, saying it would be "a big problem for an exporting country like China."

"We Europeans should use this lever of the common [EU] internal market much more," she told TAZ.

Baerbock also said it was imperative for countries around the world to "join forces" to fight climate change, adding that the crisis "can only be mastered globally and cooperatively."

. . . . .
I can't wait for China and Germany to start a trade war. Really, I don't think China should give more market to politically weak countries. They can't dominate their own country, they are just puppets of the US, so why not give their market share to Chinese and US companies? Just like we did with Australia. China has benefited and deepened its relationship with the US.

German enjoys trade surplus with the rest of the world, including China. Curbing imports will only lead to the opposite. The irony is that of all the major economies, the country with the heaviest reliance on export is actually Germany.

Of cos idiot like @Viet knows nothing about such stuff. He's holding German passport but hope the destruction of Germany by playing trade war with China. He is just a tool used by US imperialism who murder millions of Vietnamese with unilateral bombing.
Ah so many here were saying China is rising positively in Europe due to Trump..while not realizing he was actually opening their eyes.
And what happened to US trade war with China? Did US won? Last I heard, one of US senator ask for tariff on China goods to be lifted. Any real German hopefully can see the consequence of US foolish act.

It's only about countries realizing they should not be relying heavily on China for critical imports because one day China can easily throw the switch. Too many companies have gotten too cozy by moving their manufacturing to cheap labor markets.

As if you can afford to spend more money on losing manufacturing? Most countries are struggle with economy? So where do they get the money to spend money on this money losing venture? Talk is cheap and Made in China dominating the world are here to stay.

America has a lazy workforce, too many human right. Its ill efficient to made in USA. US is not stupid to pump money on this endless pit. While for German, China import huge number of German products. Talking about restricting import of China goods is suicide.

I keep forgetting China has been out of the main world loop up until 1980 so you don't have any reference.

Europe and the US have already gone through all this numerous times during past wars. This is nothing new. Trump is just reminding them of what happened during the past cutoffs.

Well somehow I guess you should be thankful the West brought you out of extinction. Tell me how life in China had changed significantly in the 2000 years before Western ships came knocking.
