China trumping US leadership in Asia: Obama

How many countries have joined the US led TPP? I think Japan is hesistating; how about Taiwan. SK?

If the PECC is right then China's motions combined add $3.044 trillion compared to US-led motion of $0.233 trillion, ratio 13 vs 1.
I think there is some overlapping in counting the figure of $3+ Tln buddy

Oh? That's right. Let's assume fully double count, then $2.4 vs $0.233, ratio 10.3: 1
So CN : US should be anywhere 10.3~13 : 1

US President Barack Obama said on Tuesday that China poses a threat to America’s mantle of economic leadership.

In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Obama said China must not be allowed to write trade rules for Asia. Obama was referring to China’s regional FTA talks, the RCEP, as well as the mammoth China-backed Asia-Pacific FTA negotiations that was launched in November last year at the APEC summit.

“But as we speak, China wants to write the rules for the world’s fastest-growing region. That would put our workers and businesses at a disadvantage. Why would we let that happen? We should write those rules. We should level the playing field. That’s why I’m asking both parties to give me trade promotion authority to protect American workers, with strong new trade deals from Asia to Europe that aren’t just free, but fair,” said Obama.

A Wall Street Journal report had said the US was trying to block China’s efforts at introducing the Asia Pacific FTA negotiations.

The China-backed Asia Pacific FTA, if implemented, will add an estimated $2.4 trillion to the global economy, says a new survey by Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC).

The survey also said the US-led TPP trade pact, when completed, will add about $223 billion and the China-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) about $644 billion.

Beijing is trying to counter US’ progress in forming a Trans-Pacific Partnership that excludes China by this alternate mega Free Trade Agreement in the Asia Pacific.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow will also support China’s push for a roadmap on the Asia Pacific FTA.

“Obviously, the Trans-Pacific Partnership is just another U.S. attempt to build an architecture of regional economic cooperation that the USA would benefit from. At the same time, I believe that the absence of two major regional players such as Russia and China in its composition will not promote the establishment of effective trade and economic cooperation,” said Putin in November last year.

Meanwhile, China and India are not included in the US-led TPP trade pact.

“We’re organising trade relations with countries other than China so that China starts feeling more pressure about meeting basic international standards,” Obama said referring to the TPP in a presidential debate in 2012.

In his SOTU address on Tuesday, the US President claimed US manufacturers “have added almost 800,000 new jobs” since 2010. He also vowed to “bring jobs home” that have been lost to cheaper manufacturing hubs abroad.

“More than half of manufacturing executives have said they’re actively looking at bringing jobs back from China. Let’s give them one more reason to get it done,” said Obama.

There were, however, roughly 2 million manufacturing jobs lost in America between December 2007 and June 2009.

Is it a joke? Look at this argument : Despite FTA with China will be more fruitful, Asian nations should not do that, because we need more jobs to create in USA.

What are you offering? Nothing. You always say it's better for USA, so the other nations should go with the USA way. That's a joke.

And look at this other argument : If China makes the trade rules in Asia, it will favor China. Therefore US should make the rules. Dude this means the rules will favor US then. What's the point? You don't offer fair share, you just offer greed.

I'd expect better from Obama.

It's a game over if you not only can't make the pie bigger to satisfy your buddies, but also want to suck their blood.
When a wall is about to collapse, everybody gives it a push(墙倒众人推).

American Pivot in Asia is brainchild of Chuck Hagel, neither Obama nor Kerry or his predecessor Clinton put much effort into this project

Obama is a failure

Leadership? What are you going to lead thousands of miles away? I like the US, they offer so much to the world but boy are they full of themselves.

China is a friendly neighbor and always ready to do business without strings.

@Nihonjin1051 , have you heard of/read about this? Details, if any?

Indeed. Losers tend to talk big. Look at what the fool says:

"But as we speak, China wants to write the rules for the world’s fastest-growing region. That would put our workers and businesses at a disadvantage. Why would we let that happen? We should write those rules. We should level the playing field."

The guy is better fix the ISIS mess it created first.

China cannot write rules. Writing rules is only reserved for United States.

.
So Obama now is not even going to pretend that he's out for the greater good and that China is the evil empire.

Why should China write the rules? Why should America write the rules.

I guess this reflects a black & white mentality. Perhaps not surprising for the "greatest nation on the face of the earth."

Only in the US would "writing the rules" for an exclusionary trade organization dominated by America be taken at face value as "leveling the playing field." The whole notion would be laughable if American leaders didn't sincerely believe in their own bullshit. American hubris never ceases to make one shake his head in amazement.
