China Toughens Its Restrictions on Use of the Internet

My experience with registry of my phone number with my passport was a prime example of what the Chinese gov wants and how reality just doesn't match. In Shanghai I went to the Unicom shop to get a phone number and the nice lady asked for my passport, the problem was my German name because the most Chinese only have three characters and my name has more than 10 letters. So, she just asked me to pick an available number and paid without any registry. Here in Germany, it's impossible not to get your number registered.

Visiting another province for a few days and in need of a new number since caling out of province is expensive I went to a kiosk near my hotel and bought a new phone number. The young lady there didn't even bother to ask me for my name or pasport. Just open the letter, take the SIM card and use it.

Here is a German article from Germany's most respected IT magazin about the new laws in China. People in the forum just laugh at the Chinese efforts because China is actually trying to catch up with us in supervising and spying its citizens. Only the gullibles think we are "free" to do what we want, particularly our brainwashed friends from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

To claim to be a journalist albeit a blogger with grandeur of being called a journalist, you sure make a feeble attempt at protecting the Chinese here . To reduce Chinese censorship to sim cards and phone registration only is extremely naive of you.

tell us in those forums do your pals discuss and laud how Germany blocks face book , YouTube, nytimes, La times , any news about SARS , earthquakes, corruption etc or have state run media as their only mouthpiece representing their press in Germany? or do they discuss how Germany throws blind dissents in jail and dissents into labor camps for simply dissenting against the govt? I know they don't because not only do they not strive for such censorship and make excuses for the Chinese like you- they sure value their freedoms.

As I said they should have people like you under similar Chinese guidelines in Germany, seeing how you so favor all things Chinese perhaps you dream of a day where germany is back to having freedoms afforded by the Nazi's. They share the similar goals when it comes to censorship

as i explained above, you need to read and comprehend what is in that article. that is not censorship forced upon anyone. Even given that it was a site that advocated killing the IRS. I'm all for you guys being censorsed...I say censor and put RFID tags on all Chinese, even the ones who live in other countries so you even control them there. I am pro china in this endevor

The Chinese boys here know that the way China is, who else besides dictatorships want to be like China? Between China and North Korea? Then yes, by all means, make China a model. But the issue is about political oppression and censorship and no one want to use China as a model when they either can use the US and Europe as models to aspire to, or they are experiencing those freedoms and use China as a model on how NOT to live. That means the only way they can make China palatable, at least to the gullibles, is to strain definitions, contexts, and eventually their own credibility, on what is 'censorship' in the US. They want to bring the US down to China's level. The sad part for them is that they know within their hearts that for themselves they want to have the full measure of freedoms and rights they see Americans enjoy.
