BEIJING: China is set to dispatch 18 high-tech metro trains to Mumbai's new subway network under a USD 110 million contract and the rails would be ready for operation after their trial run in India's financial hub.

The subway trains rolled off the production line on March 20 and would take a month to ship from Shanghai before their trial is launched in Mumbai in May, said Qian Houkuan, Director of Information and Technology at Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works which manufactured the rails.

The trains are China's first-ever export of A-type subway rails, which are wider than three metres and have greater passenger capacity than other models, the official Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying today.

The trains, with automatic driving systems and maximum speed of 80 km per hour, could operate in temperatures up to 55 degrees Celsius and 100 per cent humidity, Qin said.

Each of their 3.2-metre compartments could carry 390 people, 72 more than the 3-metre A-type trains used in China, he said.

The subway trains were sold to Mumbai at the cost of USD 110 million.

Nope china is better. Its cheap , proven and its good for building confidence among nations

China already has the world’s longest high-speed rail (HSR) network with about 6,500km (4,000 mi.) of routes in service, including 3,676km (2,295mi.) of rail lines with top speeds of 350km/h (220mph) and 2,876km (1,795mi.) with speeds up to 250km/h (155mph).[1] Some 10,000 km of rail tracks are capable of carrying trains traveling at speeds of at least 200 km/h. These include upgraded conventional lines, high-speed passenger designated lines (PDLs), and the world’s first high-speed commercial magnetic levitation (maglev) line. With generous funding from the Chinese government’s economic stimulus program, 17,000 kilometres (11,000 mi) of high-speed lines are now under construction, with plans for a total network of 50,000 kilometres (31,000 mi) by 2020

Its not just about technology. They have a established setup for production and all. Its economic to purchase from them than to learn and produce on our own. If we had to run more trains in other cities too, than it would have been a different case, but not for mumbai alone.

Aren't metros planned in every major city? Does it make sense to be operating the same hardware for economies of scale? Does it make sense to re tender every time for the mantri/babu nexus?

Gujrat factory of Bombardier has already started its delivery of Metro coaches made in india. Meanwhile BEML is already manufacturing for Rotem coaches in India.

China's rolling stock industry is posing a serious challenge to established players such as Bombardier, Alstom and Siemens, but there are also legal issues, such as allegations of violation of contract rules which forbid export of foreign technology.
Companies such as Alstom have accused China of using technology that it got from the established companies to produce trains for the local market.

False.

The presence of transfer of technology was done through multiple JVs - not with one or two companies, but many. Furthermore, major improvements were done and new advances of INDEPENDENT TECHNOLOGY has been achieved.

If you want to be petty, then ships, rudders, steel, iron, mathematics, guitar, violin, rice AND wheat cultivation, paper, gunpowder, etc can be traced back to China (which then taught the Arabs, and Russians and Europeans).

That's the fact of life. You can't "steal" what is in someone else's brains.
