China to release its own OS

Don't they(PRC) have "Redflag Linux" ?

Linux is still considered a geek's OS. I for one likes to tweak the system and use command line. I have sticked with Debian for almost 13 years. .

Not really? you will have to learn yum instead of apt and a good internet connection(which is a must for almost all distro's).
That is why Linux is not popular on desktop. Normal people don't like to use commands for working on their computer.

The main problem in Fedora is installing software via software center. If you are installing via terminal then it will update repos first. If you have a lot of repos then.... :disagree:

China to Replace Google, Microsoft With Homegrown OS

RiaNovosti

MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) – China has announced it would present its own new operating system in October, 2014, Reuters reports.

"After concerns about US surveillance and a monopoly probe of Microsoft, there is some good news for China's homegrown operating system (OS): a desktop version may be ready in October," wrote Xinhua on August, 24.

As tensions between the US and China grows over cyber security issues, Beijing is seeking a way to become independent of imported systems like Microsoft's Windows and Google's Android. The new operating system is expected to first appear on desktops and later to be adapted for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

"China has more than a dozen mobile OS developers with no independent intellectual property rights because their research is based on Android," said Ni Guangnan, Chinese Academy of Engineering representative, as cited by Xinhua.

Ni believes that a new homegrown operating system will replace the American software within one or two years. However, it will take about three or five years to supersede the imported mobile operating systems by OS developed by Chinese programmers.

Reuters emphasizes that about a year ago China banned government use of Microsoft's Windows 8 due to security concerns and initiated an investigation against the IT giant accusing it of anti-trust violations.

Google Inc. as well came under attack from Chinese authorities, who pointed to the fact the software manufacturer "had too much control over China's smartphone industry via Android mobile operating system," notes Reuters.

The revelations made by Edward Snowden provoked even further tensions between Beijing and Washington, while a string of hacking cases exposed by China and the US has added fuel to the fire.

According to Ni, the ban imposed by Beijing on Windows 8 evidently triggered a rapid growth of the Chinese information technology sector and "opened the door to domestic OS developers."

"Creating an environment that allows us to contend with Google, Apple and Microsoft - that is the key to success," he said.

Good luck China!
I hope India pursues something like this too, it's fairly important to create your own eco system.

Edit: Apparently there is one based on linux

BossLinux!
Like a boss :D

anyone have tried this?

It sucks :fie:, it is simply based on debian stable with specific default application sets . They even removed some geography study tool like marble(i think) because of J&K map from the repo ..

.
i don't see this going anywhere unless they force all chinese phone and pc manufacturers to use it, then start building an ecosystem (software, app, gamez..) around it like how IOS and android were formed. your superior os is nothing if you don't have developers making stuff to run on your platform. users will not stick with it for long if they have only few stuff toto play with. lol...
china might be able to make this work, because they have huge market, their own internet world (baidu, weibo, alibaba, tencent, 360..etc) and many big domestic hardware manufacturers behind them to start with..

dpkg and rpm are in the top package management systems. apt, yum, wajig etc etc exists over the top.

obviously, those who are into productivity instead of messing with the os, will most probably stick with Windows. they are accustomed to routine formats, defragmentation, antivirus updating etc etc, but CAD, photoshop and other critical software exists basically for Windows. but, those who are a little technically minded, will stick with such OS like BSD's and Gnu/Linux for personal use . I cannot, however accept that in the 21st century, still we are depending on microsoft and windows os which is quiet BAD except for the eyecandy. it is the software developers autodesk, adobe and millions of small software companies who makes softwares for this OS and makes the people sticks with it, eventhough they know this is a inferior system.
fortunately, in mobile platform windows is the Linux..I mean Android is the popular free option and a new environment is already created based on OSS(apps, services etc). while, Windows mobile OS and iphone os remain a minority there. hope users will prevent ms from monopolizing mobile platform. examples of microsoft monopolistic practices are EFI BIOS shoehorned for Windows OS preventing/make it hard to - install alternatives OS in your personal computer.

An interesting comment:
One of the biggest limiting factor is the refusal of application developers and vendors to overcome the pressure of Microsoft to create a monopolist and proprietary OS environment with them as the financial beneficiary. Microsoft has been unable achieve that, which should indicate to application developers and vendors, that given the
opportunity, a lot of enterprises would gladly abandon Microsoft as their prime OS. The publishing industry has not been a primary Microsoft environment for many years. The lack of industry support of publishing using Microsoft can be seen in that the latest version of MS Word that I attempted to use did not even have the publishing formatting and functionality as previous versions of MS Word.
If applications like AutoCAD do not provide a migration to Linux or Android, users and
enterprises are going to find alternatives and AutoCAD will not see the increase in the use of CAD applications and market on those OSs Considering the loss of market share by Microsoft, I would think that anyone that wants to increase their market would look at those OSs that are increasing market share, instead of staying with the one that is not increasing its market share. You can say that you never see any increase in that market, but the reality is that you never will as long as you don't have a product that will work in that market. It becomes a self defeating prophesy.

When your life is at risk, you will do anything to survive. This concept you must understand, my friend. Before there is no risk but the US gave us the final coffin with NSA program. So we are slowly creating an ecosystem ourselves. Let not forget, we have 1.3 billion people. The size is large enough to create an ecosystem.

I know your large/hard working/skilled population is more than enough bro. which begs the question, what have you been waiting to create one?
Answer: the CCP is incompetent unlike what most people think. :agree:

Exactly. Although I have access to pirated copies of Office, I prefer to use Kingsoft Office. Same as good, if not better.
nah I use microsoft, I got 8 folders with 2000 files that describes me bribing Obama into giving me the key to the white house.

Hope the NSA doesn't find that. 8-)

These kind of shameful comments are the reason the West has so much power and influence over others. Liberals remain the biggest threat to China internally.

Even if the Chinese operating system isn't as good as Microsoft, patriots should use the Chinese OS to support it.

If the Chinese OS is not the best but still good enough, then use it if you want China to develop technologically.

I cannot understand why Chinese patriots buy expensive foreign brands at the expense of Chinese brands and give the Western companies Chinese money so they can build weapons to destroy China.
Some mainland Chinese are worse than banana people.

Exactly. Although I have access to pirated copies of Office, I prefer to use Kingsoft Office. Same as good, if not better.
Chinese should pirate western software to help local companies.

lol. We know western people's trick. Always trying to discourage others from doing things. Chinese people are not blacks, we won't fall for your tricks. In fact the more you doubt us, the better we do.

I like Fedora because I think it more stable than other famous Linux distributions. However, there is still a lot missing in rpm. But still people prefer installing software from terminal not because they are so geek but because installing from software center is worse. This is not the case in dpkg when installing from software center but it is not as much good as yum.

After two decades, we are still on command line in Linux. Android is dominant because people don't have to use terminal for installing applications from Google play store. The same is needed in desktop operating system. Microsoft and Mac OS X stays dominant because they give an easy to use operating system. These two operating systems are dominant in the market that's why other companies like Adobe develop their software for these platforms. If Linux is someday able to attract a huge percentage of users then these companies will develop their software for Linux.

The only thing making Microsoft dominant is because it is easy to use and has a big library of free and paid applications. That is not the case with Linux. Linux has a lot of free and paid applications but people don't use it because it is not as much good as Microsoft Windows. Mac OS X is dominant over Linux because they have done their best to facilitate their users. Mac OS X is also Unix like operating system and they have done it. Now Linux users should also learn something from it do something awesome instead of sticking with this old style operating system.

lool What has this got to do with Blacks/Africans?:disagree: For your information, i have been to several african countries(ive lost count of how many), and i can tell you that you shouldnt be laughing off people/things you dont really know/havent witnessed first hand/been there to know the ground realities. Let me tell you bro. Africa is a diverse/big continent made of more than 50 countries. There are lots of countries in Africa who are way way better than China(even more than some eastern european countries) in terms of living standards/Gdp per capital and there are some who are more poor than Vietnam, so you shouldnt put all of them in one basket because of few bad eggs here and there. Just like Asia cant be judge by North Korea, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, Bengladesh, India etc who are still very poor/underdeveloped countries. In fact there are lots of chinese people living/doing business in Africa and many more are emmigrating to live and work there as they have come to find out that Africa is a better place to live in than China, i have seen and interacted with many there believe me, and most told me they have no intention of going back to China. So mind your words about 'Blacks' bro. Though i understand its also our fault since our media only shows Africa when they have something negative to portray about it, they only look for the worst countries affected by wars, famine, refugees, diseases etc in Africa to portray on T.V/News, and since we still control the world press/media landscape, all other countries/region get their news/view point from our 'propaganda' media outlets, China included. So i dont blame you for viewing blacks that way.:disagree:

Coming to topic, Im not trying any 'western peoples trick' here. Im surprised you even came out with such a thing. Since if you go back and look at all my comments/postings on this site since the day i registered, i have always tried to be honest in my views/observations/comments i make. I will criticize Japan if i think they did something wrong, same with China, Russia, the West/U.S, and even my own country. Afterall, we are on a discussion forum to learn/exchange ideas. Not to be blinded by nationalism/bias to the point of not being able to make rational/construictive arguments/self criticisms. It seems anyody that doesnt agree/say something that you dont consider is favourable to China, you just label them anti china 'western imperialists' etc. If you go through my comments you will find out that im very from that. many members here can attest to that.
I know its hard to accept criticism, Many members here have accused me of not being british(LMAO:lol:) just because i said something they didnt like about their country/policies. But when i make a point that is positive about their country they are happy and hail me. i know the truth is hard to swallow though., Just ask my friend Nihonji how sometimes i have made bad/hard fact/points about Japan that even him didnt like(i like being honest) and i will keep doing it if i see theres something wrong abd give praise when it deserves to be.:agree: Members here ought to grow up and be ready to accept constructive criticisms.then we will be able to have a proper/constructive conversation bro.:-):china::usflag:

He can't fool us here :D , i do wish the Scottish were smart enough to vote for independence next month. Seems unlikely to happen, still they have my blessing :agree:

The scottish can vote for independence if they so choose bro. Thats why we gave them a choice, since we are a democracy. Though we have come a long long way. I dont see many countries who will be willing to even allow such votes. Not even democratic countries today will accept that. E.g Spain still doesnt wants to hold a referedum of basque independence, same with France refusing to do one with Corse(a french island in south of France), India refusing with Kashmir and many other northeast states yearning for some sort of independence, Thailand/phillippines and its muslims south insurgents. etc... the list goes on and on...........
