I think some fields, you can work in with only a BS. These are more applied. Highly theoretical fields and highly fundamental fields need a PhD. A BS in materials science can make realistic contributions to plastics processing or metallurgy. A BS in mechanical engineering can make realistic contributions to machine building. A BS in theoretical physics can be a stock market analyst at best, never a physicist.

Why does everything always come down to China vs. India on this forum?! China is decades ahead of India and other developing countries in terms of its institutions and education. Look, this isn't about China vs. India, it's about a country trying to reach parity with the developed world in terms of science and technology so it will not have to suffer another century of humiliation at the hands of foreign occupiers. Today it's China that's getting all the nasty comments (like those on CNN about how China will implode, Chinese people will never reach the same development as the West etc.) and negative opinions (check the BBC's report on global views on China's rising economic power and how Europeans view China negatively while vast majority of the developing world view China's economic rise positively), tomorrow it will be India. When India reach the same level of sophistication that China has today, then it too will be in the cross hair of the West. Being a democracy won't help you, is Iran not a democracy? Venezuela?

Don't we all know the double standards of the West by now? Developing countries should stick together because we are fighting for our right to develop and prosper. China is the most advanced developing country and is the richest, China lends out a lot of money to other developing countries at generous rates, is this not a fact? Indians should not be tempted into thinking that it is a Western country, India is a developing country and we all need to stick together or else it will be divide and conquer all over again for the West. Wake up Indians! Your honeymoon with the West has a time limit, when parity with the West is in reach, they'll try to take you down.
