China has announced it will launch its Chang'e II lunar orbiter in October, in a bid to analyze the soil structure on the moon by photographing the lunar surface.
Chang'e II is the first of the three flight missions in the second stage of China's lunar exploration project (Chang'e project). The orbiter will fly at an altitude of 100 kilometers from the moon's surface, 100 kilometers closer than its predecessor, Chang'e I.
Yuan Jiajun, deputy General Manager of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, said China plans to land a lunar rover to the moon in 2013.
China first launched Chang'e I to space in October 2007, successfully completing the first stage of the project. The third stage is scheduled to be completed by 2018, according to Yuan.
