An Asian government source has disclosed to IHS Jane's estimates of China's future combat aircraft fleet size and composition that are larger - and more specific - than those offered in the annual China Military Power reports published by the US Department of Defense.

The latest Pentagon report issued on 5 June 2014 sounded an alarm about China air combat forces, saying the People's Liberation Army Air Force "is pursuing modernisation on a scale unprecedented in its history and is rapidly closing the gap with Western air forces across a broad spectrum of capabilities including aircraft, command and control, jammers, electronic warfare, and datalinks".

China needs to have around 1500 to 2000 4 Generation Fighter Jets at least to counter India and Japan and Vietnam and USA supported Taiwan

But who's to say that the United States will not increase the number of aircraft in their arsenal , or begin refitting their air fleet with 5th generation fighters? They are so many leagues ahead of many world militaries.

Unless China wants to start WW3, it cannot fight all countries above at the same time. Also more army equipment means more personels to be trained to operate them. It's the people who win the war, not the machine.

I don't think we have any 3rd gens of any serious quantity left in service. They are all mothballed. Right now it's 4th gen with a little 5th gen. When F35 production ramps up it will be tilted towards 5th gen as the 4th gens start being mothballed. I would assume the 3rd gen F4 Phantoms will then be up for sale at rock bottom prices.

I should use West standard to classify fighter generation. I mean 1600+ F-16/F-15/F-18/F-22 in Airforce, it should be 4-gen/5-gen fighters.

Sorry we ever used total 4 gens fighter standard in Chinese military forum, i didn't corrected it yet.

No use for China fighter in SCS(east sea) conflict bcz all of China air base in Hainan and in SCS(east sea) r in our ground-attack missile range.

And China also trying to settle the dispute with India, so they wont keep threatening each other.
