Fri, Sep 4, 2015, 11:07 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Sept 04, Colombo: China will build a 100 million dollar specialized hospital in Sri Lanka to treat the patients with the mysterious kidney disease that is striking mainly rice farmers in Sri Lanka's north central region.
China will be constructing the fully-pledged 500-bed hospital in Polonnaruwa district in response to a request made by President Maithripala Sirisena.
A team of Chinese Government officials visited Polonnaruwa to inspect the land proposed for the construction of the Hospital. Director of the Kidney Disease Prevention Task Force Asela Iddawela and Polonnaruwa District Secretary S. Senanayake joined the Chinese officials on this occasion.
President Sirisena during his tour of China earlier this year has requested his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping to build a fully-fledged Kidney Hospital.
Furthermore, China has undertaken to identify the cause of the mysterious disease and water samples from affected areas are now under research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences to identify the actual cause of the disease, a Chinese diplomat said during a discussion with the President in July.
Plans are afoot to commence work on the Kidney Hospital before the end of this year.
