China has decided to end its decades-long one-child policy, Xinhua news agency reports.

All couples will now be allowed to have two children, the state-run news agency said, citing a statement from the Communist Party.

The controversial policy was introduced nationally in 1979, to reduce the country's birth rate and slow the population growth rate.

However, concerns at China's ageing population led to pressure for change.

The one-child policy is estimated to have prevented about 400m births since it began.

Couples who violated the policy faced a variety of punishments, from fines and the loss of employment to forced abortions.

Over time, the policy was relaxed in some provinces, as demographers and sociologists raised concerns about rising social costs and falling worker numbers.

The Communist Party began formally relaxing national rules two years ago, allowing couples in which at least one of the pair is an only child to have a second child.

The announcement comes on the final day of a summit of the Chinese Communist Party's policy-making Central Committee, known as the fifth plenum.

The party is also set to announce growth targets and its next five year plan.

Its hard to raise 2 kids now.
Agree, the life level is improving ,people always want to be better and cost rise, you can feed the children like the sheep but nowaday you have to pay more for the baby with higher salary which means more pressured life for your married life.:what:

I think it is too late for china to open the two children for the family that the young couple has form the opinion one children is the lifestlye for them,if you wanna more ,hard for us to transform the mind.

the government should have made some rules promoting two female children or at least one compulsory female child child over males... india, with possibly 850 million males at least, is example of how unscientific population planning can affect local society and the world.

Does Indian families have preference for boys over girls?

In the some big chinese city, the couple prefer the girl rather than the boys.
If you have boy ,you have to work harder, preprare the money for your son forture wedding, cause the girl will not marry a man without the appartment in the city while the people in the countryside like boy traditionally.

generally yes and this is prevalent among the younger married lot too to a extent... one man i knew, his age was 35 then i think, had two sons and i asked him about daughters... he said something like the sons will carry on the family name ( because the daughters will get married and take on the husband's surname ).

but the situation is quite tragic really... female foeticide is a regular occurence in many parts of india ( Where Are India's 60 Million Missing Girls? The Tragic, Obvious Answer ------- THE 50 MILLION MISSING CAMPAIGN: FIGHTING FEMALE GENDERCIDE IN INDIA | This is a global campaign to fight female genocide in India. Due to the rampant practices of female foeticide, female infanticide, and dowry murders, more than 50 million women have been exterminated from India's population in 3 generations. Please endorse our petition that demands immediate government and international action. )...

...and quite horrific in fact in some parts ( Female foetuses in Beed fed to dogs to hide evidence | Daily Mail Online ).

hmm, it is opposite in india... indian traditions, even among the muslims sadly, dictate that the father of the girl start saving money from her birth onwards for her future wedding jewellery and the dowry that her father must give to her husband.

it is sad that though dowry is illegal, not only do many so-called highly educated females go to their new husband's homes with dowry, i have read of female police constables ( knowing anti-dowry law ) being harassed by their husband's family for dowry !!
