China, Thailand to build strategic canal

China and Thailand have agreed to start construction on a canal which will cut through the Malay peninsula linking the South China Sea and the Andaman Sea.

The ambitious project will offer an alternative sea link between Asia with the Middle East and Europe to the Strait of Malacca, a key shipping lane for world trade.

Chinese and Thai officials signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Guangzhou this week on a project that is expected to take 10 years to complete for an investment of at least $US28 billion, reports the Hong Kong-based Oriental Daily.

The 100 kilometre long ‘Kra Canal' will offer an alternative route from the Straight of Malacca, which passes by Singapore, cutting down the current route by 1,200 kilometres.

Chinese officials described the project as part of the country's proposed "Maritime Silk Road," an effort to revive a trade route running from China through Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean to Europe.

The Straight of Malacca is one of the world's busiest international shipping lanes with up to 40 per cent of the world’s trade passing through it.

It is of particular strategic significance to China as 80 per cent of the country's oil imports passing through it. At its narrowest point, the Malacca Straight is only 2.7 kilometres long, creating a natural bottleneck.

The announcement comes as tensions between the US and China mount over Chinese island-building in disputed waters.

China has dramatically ramped up its land reclamation efforts in the South China Sea this year, building artificial islands at an unprecedented pace to bolster its territorial claims, US officials say.

The rapid construction of artificial islands in the strategic waters comes to 2,000 acres (800 hectares), with 75 per cent of the total in the last five months.

What China has been doing is unprecedented. To embark even on anything close to the scale and strategic importance of such a Chinese project in foreign territories, the best practice of the Colonial Powers, purely out of self-serving interests and self-gratification, would be first "opening up" those economies with Gunboat diplomacy to gain absolute control of such vital infrastructures that, once completed, would facilitate the looting of natural resources on foreign soil.

Instead of coming with the Colonial Rule of guns that left behind trails of blood in the pillagers' tracks wherever they went, China is today, extending the hand of friendship to their hosts with only pen, cash and expertise, contributing to the development of common interests that build up goodwill among nations. Not staining foreign soil with the blood of locals as a memento to them, what that kiss the earth are only beads of Chinese sweat, nourishing the ties that bind partners together in a truly enduring spirit of cooperation.

China’s ambassador to Thailand has denied any official involvement in a project to construct a canal through the Malay peninsula linking the South China Sea and the Andaman Sea.

Earlier a report in the Hong Kong-based Oriental Daily claimed that Chinese and Thai officials had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Guangzhou for the ambitious project.

Ditto the Nicaragua Grand Canal Project。

The less governmental involvement the better。

Chinese companies, together with their Thai partners, are capable of handling the project tech-wise and finance wise on their own。:D

I think nothing confusing here. Firstly, when it comes to all these canals, the Chinese government itself is never involved, its always a private consortium doing the legwork. Secondly, the agreement was for an exploration and feasibility study, so no governments need get involved at this stage. Thirdly, no one wants to make waves on this matter as it involves too many factors, many of which can change over time, so of course all the officials are doing the denying part now. I'm pretty sure as soon as the study comes in and the financial temptations become more substantive, than you'd see some real commitments regardless of politics
