Mainland opens office to handle Taiwan-related petitions

The State Council Taiwan Affairs Office (SCTAO) on Friday officially opened a special office to manage public petitions related to Taiwan affairs.

Petitioning, also known as "letters and calls", is the administrative system for hearing public complaints and grievances. Petitioners generally see injustice in land acquisition, social security, education, healthcare or environmental protection.
The move aims to regulate the management of petitions related to Taiwan and better serve petitioners, according to a SCTAO statement released Friday.

SCTAO vice director Gong Qinggai urged the office to listen to the complaints and demands of Taiwan compatriots and Taiwanese spouses in the mainland and try to solve their problems.

Swimmers from both sides to cross Taiwan Strait

The Taiwan Strait stands as one of the last straits to be conquered by human swimmers. Swimmers from both the mainland and Taiwan will swim across the strait on Monday, and are preparing for this test of endurance.

14 relay swimmers, including 6 from the mainland and 8 from Taiwan, were due to swim cross the strait on Monday. They will start in Taiwan’s Hinschu county and paddle their way to Pingtan county in Fujian province, a straight-line distance of 140 kilometers.

Swimmers from both the mainland and Taiwan will swim across the strait on Monday, and are preparing for this test of endurance.

The course, on the other hand, measures out to be about 250 kilometers, and is expected to take more than 72 hours to complete. The 14 athletes will be swimming day and night in a relay fashion. The wind and waves will be major obstacles for the athletes.

"This would mainly be a psychological challenge for our swimmers. When we swim in the sea, the tide will sometimes be very high, so will we be afraid? And can we get over our fear?" Zhang Jian, the swimming team captain, said.

In addition to the weather conditions, marine life, especially sharks and jellyfish, could also be a threat to the swimmers.

According to the event’s organizers, each swimmer will be equipped with a special sonar device, which can send out a certain frequency of sound waves to ward off sharks. And the swimming suits they wear are also specially designed.

"One of the major functions of the one-piece swimming suit is to protect our skin from jellyfish and also the sun," said Zhang Jie, one of the swimming team members.

What’s more, there will be a 70-meter escort boat sailing along with the swimmers. It will work to help the swimmers deal with seasickness and make sure they have energy before they go into the sea. The security team for the swim is going all out to make sure that the swimmers will be at their best while they make history in the strait.
