Experts hail Xi's speech on cross-Strait relations
2016-11-03 16:23 | Xinhua | Editor: Xu Shanshan

Cross-Strait experts have given high appraisals of remarks made by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on relations between mainland and Taiwan.

Xi made a speech on Tuesday underscoring the importance of the 1992 Consensus and the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations during his meeting with a delegation led by Hung Hsiu-chu, leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) party in Taiwan.

"Safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the core national interest, and it is a line that cannot be crossed," Xi said in the speech.

His words have shown steadfast resolve, full confidence and competence in containing "Taiwan independence," said Ni Yongjie, deputy director of the Shanghai Institute of Taiwan Studies.

According to Tang Yonghong, head of the economic research center of Xiamen University's Taiwan Research Institute, the general secretary's speech addressed common concerns across the Taiwan Strait and will play a leading role in boosting cross-Strait ties.

Xi's remarks on jointly carrying forward the fine traditions of Chinese culture and boosting benefits for compatriots on both sides show the mainland's sincerity and goodwill in advancing cross-Strait relations, Tang said.

Wu Jung-yuan, organizer of the "Cross-Strait Peace and Development Forum" and chairman of Taiwan's Labor Party, said the six-point proposal by Xi indicated the fact that the mainland and Taiwan belong to an inseparable community of common destiny.

Xi advocated social and economic integrative development across the Strait, paying special attention to the grassroots and young people in Taiwan. His words are full of good will, embodying the idea that "we are one family," Wu added.

Yu Muming, chairman of Taiwan's New Party, spoke highly of Xi's remarks about upholding the 1992 Consensus and one-China principle.

Yu said national reunification and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation have long been the pursuit of all Chinese people. People on both sides of the Strait should make concerted efforts to achieve the goal, he said.

Xiangshan for 香山?:enjoy:

Xiangshan for 香山?:enjoy:

象山。:D But 香山 also sounds not bad.

This is in he midst of Taipei and easily accessible by Metro. So, easy destination for tourists, even for those who come for a conference. Because of the crowd, I do not like the place too much. But, it has a good view of the city.

Here some of my own from recent years. Nothing much has changed:

PLA jets circled Taiwan Province: Official
Source: Globaltimes.cn Published: 2016/12/6

Taiwan defense officials confirmed on Monday that several fighter jets of the People's Liberation Army flew over the Bashi Channel and Miyako Strait last month during a drill in the Western Pacific Ocean, the first time PLA fighter jets have done so.

The PLA dispatched H-6 bombers, electronic reconnaissance jets and Su-30 fighter bombers to join a drill in the Western Pacific on November 25, according to earlier media reports.

The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of Taiwan's "legislature" asked the island's defense and security agencies to report the incident on Monday. A defense official said he was not surprised since the PLA has the capability to carry out the mission, and that there is no need to adjust Taiwan's response strategies.
Media reports said the PLA flew near Taiwan's flight information region (FIR) three times in September, October and November. Taiwan's defense authorities, however, counted more than three times, though the jets didn't enter its air defense identification zone.

The official noted such flying missions began in 2013 and the drills were carried out 1,000 kilometers from what China refers to as the first island chain, therefore the PLA had other targets in mind than Taiwan.

This has nothing to do with Trump's Twit Crusade.

For the 2nd time today and apparently on a larger scale.

The Japs have reportedly scrambled over 10 F-15s.

Aging F-15s. :lol::lol:

If Mr. Abe cannot cook a TPP with Trump, he might as well try a Taiwan trick. He looks desperate hence weak. Perhaps China has decided to ignore him (just like we do with India) as if he did not even exist.

CPC, KMT to hold dialogue on cross-Strait ties
Xinhua, December 20, 2016

A dialogue between the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang party will be held on Dec. 23 in Beijing, a mainland spokesperson said Tuesday.

An Fengshan, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the exchange will focus on relations between the two parties and cross-Strait ties, aiming to promote exchanges, cooperation, cross-Strait stability and the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

An was also asked to comment on Taiwan's legislative body lowering the threshold for a referendum by adopting a "law amendment."

"We firmly oppose 'Taiwan independence' activities or moves that open the door to 'Taiwan independence' launched by any force or any means, including the means of so called legislation or law revision," he said.

Costco to open branch in Xinzhuang District [Taiwan]
CNA
December 21, 2016, 12:16 am TWN

http://www.chinapost.com.tw/taiwan/national/national-news/2016/12/21/487281/Costco-to.htm

Costco Wholesale Taiwan announced Tuesday that it will open a branch in New Taipei's Xinzhuang District Jan. 7.

The Xinzhuang branch will be the 13th Costco outlet in Taiwan since the big-box wholesale hypermarket operator made inroads into the country for the first time in 1997.

The new branch, which is five stories tall and has a floor area of 13,220 square meters, is located near Fu Jen University MRT station.

Wang Yu-mei (王友玫), vice general manager of Costco Taiwan's marketing department, said the company hopes that the new branch will attract more young consumers, in addition to family consumers.

After it opened its first Taiwan outlet in 1997, Costco has gained popularity in Taiwan. As of the end of last year, Costco had enrolled some 2.6 million members in the country of 23 million residents, with the membership renewal rate hitting 90 percent.

The American warehouse-style store opened its 12th branch in the Taipei suburb of Beitou in April this year.
