BEIJING: As a friend of India and Pakistan, China said Thursday that it will continue to support the two countries to improve relations through dialogue and cooperation.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks after Pakistan granted the Most Favored Nation (MFN) status to India.

Both India and Pakistan were important countries in South Asia, Hong said, adding that their improving bilateral ties were vital for peace, stability and development.

Pakistan's cabinet Wednesday approved India for MFN status. India had given Pakistan the MFN status in 1996.

India-Pakistan trade was logged at $2.5 billion in 2010-11 and the two countries are targetting to double this in the next five years.

When a country grants a foreign territory the MFN status, it signifies that import barriers would be lowered and import quotas raised for goods originating from that country.

Pakistan would now loosen import restrictions from India. At present, Islamabad allows import of only 1,946 items from New Delhi. India does not permit trade in 850 items with Pakistan.

Pakistan pawn of china, India pawn of USA, Pakistan pawn of USA , India pawn of Russia ....there is no end to all this allegations ,

Bottom line is Pak granting India MFN status was long time due and a welcome move !
Why Foster suspicion where as this is a good Confidence building measure !!!

Pakistani public like it or not... Pak govt is a pawn to US and India had been a difficult customer for US and US arms twisting never worked with us. When we welcome their change in attitude, we also see them suspiciously. This kind of relationship is not new to us. Israel/Palestine, Iran/USA, Russia/USA all these countries have some level of ties with India which cannot be deemed as Master/Slave relationship.

Pakistan wants to shed this tag but the economy is not helping it though. Do keep working on it and thou you will succeed.

Yes, the perception that indus could not be trusted as they are chanakya followers and change colors as required is now called world diplomacy.

There are no permanent friends, only permanent interests. So the saying goes. Now what is China's interest in an Indo-Pak detente that would result in better relations between the two estranged neighbors? On the face of it, China needs to keep India focused on Pakistan militarily to ensure its Southern flank is taken care of. For China, Pakistan is a low-cost secondary deterrent to India.

Secondly, India's growth rate is being affected by the billions of dollars being spent on defence instead of other social programs. Friendly relations would result in the military focus shifting from Pakistan to China which needless to say would be a disadvantage to China.

So the million dollar question is: Why would China want better relations between India and Pakistan? It certainly seems to go against its national interests. However, any confrontation between India and Pakistan is not in China's interest and would put Beijing in the position of having to choose between the two countries and draw the United States further into the region.

But most importantly, active hostilities between India and Pakistan - even a limited war, could set back the healthy Sino-Indian trade scenario which is climbing at an astonishing rate, set to achieve a target of $100 billion by 2015! And needless to say the balance of trade is highly skewed in China's favour! In other words, Indian money being used to help arm itself with all those fancy weapon systems!!

In this sense, peace between India and Pakistan is in China's interest.
