In total war where the entire nation is mobilized, Vietnam would get it even worse. The only thing that has saved Vietnam's butt time and time again is China's adherence to limited and clearly stated military objectives. Imagine a war of extermination where the Geneva convention and most rules of warfare are thrown out the window. Like that fought between the USSR and Nazi Germany during WW2 but in the 21st century between China and Vietnam. Even the most stubbornly deluded Viet knows what the outcome of something like that would be. Vietnam would be gone, phoever.
