China-Sri Lanka Cooperation: News & Discussions

Do you know how high the interest rate on China loan to Sri Lanka? please don't bullsh1 but to provide some number to backup your claim. When Vietnam own money to Japan or Korea, do you think they will generously write it off, you will have to repay one way or other, I think Vietnam will have to do beyond underwear stripped off...LMAO.
  he begged for a public shaming... and you obliged generously...

Lanka's current leadership cannot be trusted. Let them rot until Rajpaksa is back.

Rajapaksa is never going to return. His thugs attacked and injured a MP in the middle of parliament

Sri Lanka, China to Hold Discussions on FTA

Sri Lanka and China will hold high level discussions in June on the possibility of signing a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Sri Lanka's Ministry of Industry and Commerce said in a statement in Colombo,Sri Lanka.

"China is a promising market for Sri Lanka's select, premium products such as gems, and an important round of bilateral talks on Sri Lanka-China FTA is scheduled for next month," the statement quoted Rishard Bathiudeen, minister of Industry and Commerce, as saying.

The minister said that Sri Lanka was committed to pursuing an outward oriented trade regime following the principles of the World Trade Organization, with a view to enhancing overseas market access for its export products and achieving greater integration into the world economy.

Sri Lanka has already signed free trade agreements with India and Pakistan and both the agreements allow more than 4000 product lines to be exported to these markets at zero duty.

"Sri Lanka actively involves in Joint Economic Commissions and bilateral forums with a number of countries in order to enhance our trade and commercial relations," the minister said.

He added that trade between Sri Lanka and China crossed the $4 billion mark last year for the first time in the bilateral trade history, surging by 17 percent from 2014's $3.58 billion.

About 93 percent of last year's total trade was imports from China, mainly iron and steel, fabrics & fibres, cotton and urea fertilizer.

there is nothing call trust unless both nations are mutually dependent, international politic is about interest and not trust.

Let's get this straight.. The whole pretense of this article is condescending and written by an Indian to Indian media and commentated by a so called Indian "Expert".. Nothing but a veil attempt showcasing Indian insecure mentality viz a viz China and it's growing influence in the region

An absolute internal matter for Sri Lanka on a bilateral Sino/Lanka issue, India has no say in it

As i have mentioned in a similar thread in the South Asian forum.. It's a case of mismanagement of funds by a corrupt regime which China had no say in, They came to do business and invest but the Rajapaksa government either siphoned it off in to their pockets or spend it on ego boosting white elephant projects, Which has led to the current predicament of debt payments.. Only the Rajapaksa's are to be blamed for that not China

Whats disappointing is to see a few Chinese posters here commenting like some Indians with little respect as if Lankan people are slavish to the whims and fancies of China.. You have no say in internal politics of the country.. Lankan people choose their leaders not to satisfy outsiders Not to the Chinese, Not Indian or the West but for their own interests

I firmly believe that there must be a way out of this mess

Agree, Lankan people choose their leader for their own interest and not to please other nations, that why I said international relation is base on interest rather than trust, a new Sri Lanka government came into power doesn't necessary see the same interest as previous one and China should not expect to base the relationship with Sri Lanka on trust but to work on mutual interest.

And please don't get me wrong when I replied to @Viet for his comment that the Sri Lankans are stripped off until underwear by China,I just tried to make him understand that China didn't do business different then other nations such Japan or Korea as they did in Vietnam, And I'm sorry if I said something that offend our Sri Lankan friends, it wasn't my intentions.

The FTA negotiations are too slow and Sri Lanka needs more professionals. We have a lot of FTAs to sign

How many have you being negotiating at the moment? Any big ticket negotiations like ASEAN, or EU?

We dont really have much with US or EU. We are negotiating with regainining GSP+ with EU
Chinese FTA will come first while a FTA with Japan is also happening but its still in the initial discussion stages.
We actually lack enough profesionals to discuss these and boosting trade was only added recently to the government policy with the Ministry of Internatinal trade created last year with the change of govt but it still doesnt solve the issue of lacking profeesionals needed for the job

After those are done Trade agreements with Singapore, Malaysia and Turkey are coming

The other big issue is TPP. Sri Lankan apparel exporters will face a massive challange if its signed and the effects on the SL economy. The government is researching its effects and is still considering what option to take

In the Economic Policy Statement, which was released on 5th November 2015, the need to address TPP was mentioned but short of suggesting how the government intends to do this. There have been calls by some academics for Sri Lanka to join the TPP, which would also trigger much needed but difficult reforms in the country. Others have suggested Sri Lanka to review its prevailing trade negotiations strategy and engage in bilateral deals with the US, and the EU to mitigate the negative effects of TPP. However, it is important to note that the TPP was designed primarily by developed countries with their own concerns in mind. While poorer countries may feel pressured to join to avoid being excluded from an agreement involving their competitors, we may not be ready to adopt many of the provisions in agreement. One may recall Sri Lanka’s own experience with negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India sometime back, which only covered trade in goods, services and investment. In the event the TPP becomes a reality, Sri Lanka must carefully assess the costs and benefits of joining the Agreement with due stakeholder consultations. Meanwhile, it is best that Sri Lanka urgently improves its export competitiveness by addressing constraints on multiple fronts, including supply side capacities and weaknesses in the business environment - See more at: http://www.dailymirror.lk/96343/tra...plications-for-sri-lanka#sthash.VubxziAy.dpuf

Beijing, China: The South China Sea disputes should be resolved through bilateral talks between China and the countries concerned rather than being subject to external forces, a leader of Sri Lanka's ruling party said today.

Kabir Hashim, General Secretary of ruling United National Party, made the remarks during his meeting with Song Tao, head of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

"Regional affairs should be settled through consultations among those directly concerned, rather than being subject to external forces," Mr Hashim was quoted as saying by state-run Xinhua news agency.

China has been seeking support to its stand for bilateral settlement of issues as a tribunal appointed by UN Convention on Law of Seas (UNCLOS) geared up to deliver its judgement. China has boycotted the tribunal.

Beijing says over 40 countries back its stand.

Mr Hashim said China is a significant force to maintain regional peace and development and Sri Lanka believes the CPC and the Chinese government will play a more active role in this regard.

Looks like VN and PH are being isolated in the region except for emotional support from the sugar (US) daddy.

Wise statement. Foreign, especially US, meddling will only bring disaster. We know the implications of their peacetime presence in Okinawa; just imagine their conduct in war times. So, keep them away, at where they deserve to be.

I do not mind too much about Japan's meddling so long as they act on their own behalf, but not as a side-kick to the US regime.
