BEIJING - China will sign an agreement of Rs14.4 billion today (Thursday) with the Sindh government for a major Karachi transport project.

The agreement is part of Sindh government’s Karachi mass transit programme. The plan includes six Bus Rapid Transport corridors, two mass rapid transit corridors and revitalisation of Karachi circular railway.

The 26.5 kilometer yellow line component will be constructed under public-private partnership. It will have 104 buses. The BRT corridor will have five lines tagged as green line (17 km), orange line (3.9 km), yellow line (26.5 km), blue line (38 km) and red line (22 km).

The green line is being sponsored by the federal government and Prime Minister has already performed its groundbreaking. The expenses of the yellow line are being shared by the Sindh government and the construction company – the China Urban Elected Company - together with the loan by Chinese financial institutions.

The Sindh government will provide 14 per cent, the construction company will share 16 per cent while the rest of the cost will be met through the Chinese loans.

The yellow line BRT is part of the six BRT corridors that were proposed by Japan International Cooperation Agency to improve the traffic situation in Karachi. The Karachi Mass Transit Cell had invited international tenders for its yellow line.

The expected daily ridership of the new projects would be 350,000 and the system length would be 109km. Upon completion it is expected to be the largest metro bus service in the country. The project was inaugurated on Feb 25, 2016 and is expected to begin operation by February 2017.

The system is divided into several line’, the construction on the green line started on February 26, 2016, the line has 22 bus stations covering a length of 26 kilometer.

Orange line construction began on June 11, 2016 and is the smallest of the five line's spreading over 3.9km with only four stations. The blue line is funded by Bahria Town Group.

The initial ‘green line’ is one of several proposed Karachi Metrobus lines that will crisscross Karachi and complement the Karachi Circular Railway. The route will approximately 26 kilometer. When completed, it will have the capacity to carry 150,000 people daily.

The green line will extend from Surjani Town to Merewether Tower at a total length. The federal government will be financing the majority of the project.

The blue line will extend from Merewether Tower to Bahria Town through DHA City, Karachi in the way at a total length of 30 km (19 mi), and will be the first privately funded transport system in Pakistan being funded by the Bahria Town. The line's construction is likely to start in the first quarter of 2017.

The yellow line will extend from Numiash Chowrangi to Landi Station at a total length of 26km. The red line will extend from Model Colony to Regal Chowk Via Safoora Goth and University Road. Asian development bank will be financing the project.

Orange line would be spread over 3.75 kilometers of which one kilometer is an elevated lane. The construction started in summer of 2016 and is likely to complete by mid-2017.

The line will have the capacity to carry up to 50,000 passengers daily and there would be a station after every kilometer. The line starts from Shaharh-e-Quaideen and merges with the Green Line at the board office.

Sindh Minister for Transport and Mass Transit Syed Nasir Hussain – who is in Beijing to sign the agreement - said China’s largest private company was ready to complete the project in Sindh.

Apart from yellow line, he said, the blue and red lines projects were purely Sindh government’s initiatives while the green line was a federal project. Asian Development Bank and a German bank were assisting the government in the projects, he said.

The minister said the motor vehicle inspection was to be outsourced in Sindh like Punjab. It was delayed because police department had obtained a stay over the issue but now it had been resolved. “We will launch intra-city project first at divisional level in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Larkana and Benazirabad and then replicate it at district level,” he said.

Hussain said the yellow line project was to be completed within two years and the Chinese company had given guarantees to finish the job in time.

Earlier, speaking at a meeting with the Hubei provincial government in China, Vice President PPP Senator Sherry Rehman said that China was projecting power that is industrial-led, manufacturing-led and now it was exporting its surplus.

She said that by leveraging economic gains, China was laying new groundwork for amplifying its soft power in reaching out so extensively to all of Eurasia via the OBOR. “We are looking forward to pairing Karachi and Wuhan- both of which are commercial centres. We are looking forward to deepening cooperation,” she said.

Senator Rehman lauded the development of Hubei and China’s overall transformation. She praised the work that the Communist Party of China has achieved at the grass root level. “The world is studying China with great interest,” she said. “Pakistan is one of China's oldest friends and a student of Chinese growth,” she added. She said that at a time when the world economy is going down and inequality is increasing, China is surging ahead. “China is a driver of growth, connectivity, infrastructure and energy,” said the Senator. Referring to OBOR as the new innovation in linkage, she said: “Pakistan wants to be the most important partner of China in this quantum leap.” “We see China as more than a country- a great civilisation that is finding its voice,” said the lawmaker. “China is looking to become a smart-knowledge economy,” she added.

Senator Rehman said that Pakistan was looking to build on its security transition and is looking forward to securing and realising the opportunities embedded in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

I don't understand the logic of every city signing the bus project. We should stop wasting our resources and focus on underground Railways for major cities like Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore

Well there is less money to be made Train subway project and have you see how much water is collected on these "Under" passes

Subway will become swimming pool due to hasty engineering practice

Underground railways is a very expensive and very disruptive project for overpopulated cities. Furthermore it will take years to build...Islamabad can be a good candidate but not Lahore and Karachi. These two metropoles are overpopulated.
However what we should do is to incorporate the provision for underground railways for the new cities. Gwader is the best candidate for that... I can see it sprawling very fast and expanding exponential within a decade and if we plan an underground train system for it, that will be great...another city is Quetta due to the extreme winters and snow and being a relatively small city, it can also be really a good candidate.

Karachi, Lahore and Peshawer will require a lot of planning and clever engineering to build the trains system without much disruption.

Why don't Simply make elevated tracks of Metro Rail like they are doing in Lahore... Cheap Effective takes less time to make

And Install Solar panels on both sides to provide electricity...

Underground will take alot of time and a lot of money...

Train system like Dubai metro needed most importantly areas far away from main Karachi need more attention like Gulshan e hadeed steel town Bhans colony and pippri

yeh sab Zerdari k sikhaey hoay hain.....just wait for some time, Balochistan will also sign a similar agreement.....khalo Pakistan ko sary milker.

a tunnel boring machine can be used for underground subway system, will cause minimum disruption above the ground.

and use hybrid buses, will surely save a lot of fuel cost.

You must be kidding me. Underground train for Islamabad ..Do you know the cost of drilling mountains????? Genius underground trains are made in those cities where you don't want to disturb the old heritage sites. keeping the old structure of the city as it is. Like right now 8 sites in Lahore are going to be damaged by orange line train so Lahore was the best contender for underground train.

Out of this, 14b will go to Zardari and .5 will be lost since the waderas and their ilk will drain it all for their own coffers.
So essentially this deal is worth .1billion

You must be kidding me. Underground train for Islamabad ..Do you know the cost of drilling mountains????? Genius underground trains are made in those cities where you don't want to disturb the old heritage sites. keeping the old structure of the city as it is. Like right now 8 sites in Lahore are going to be damaged by orange line train so Lahore was the best contender for underground train.
Kiddo...how much world have you seen,...have you ever stepped out of Pakistan, or for that matter, out of your city?

They are doing all this investment so that they can say that they did give something to Karachi. However the biggest problem for Karachi currently is Sewerage, which if not solved then its fruits will reflect on these Metro Projects and they will be completely destroyed within a year like many others.....

For these metro projects to be successful they should be elevated mostly, then only will they become successful.
