China slammed Indonesia on Sunday for “harassment” after its navy detained a Chinese boat and its seven crew, accusing them of fishing illegally in Indonesian waters of the South China Sea.

The fishermen were intercepted near the Natuna islands on Friday, Indonesia’s navy spokesman said.

This is at least the third such incident since March.

Last month, Indonesia’s navy fired shots at a Chinese trawler when it refused to stop fishing in Indonesian waters, and then seized the vessel and its eight crew.

Indonesian navy fires shots, seizes Chinese fishing boat near disputed South China Sea
In response to the latest incident, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said China strongly protested against Indonesia’s actions and condemned the detention of the crew.

Hua said the fishermen were “harassed” by and shot at by the Indonesian navy during their “regular fishing operation”, and that China had immediately dispatched coastguard vessels nearby to protect the fishing boat and the crew.

“The Indonesian naval warship has abused their force, to harass and shoot at the Chinese fishing boat and has threatened the safety and property of the Chinese fishermen,” she said.

“This has seriously violated the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea [UNCLOS] and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea,” she said.

One fisherman was injured during the incident, and was transported to nearby Hainan province for treatment, Hua added.

The UNCLOS, a treaty which both China and Indonesia are signatories, provides guidelines for how nations use the world’s seas and their natural resources.

Indonesia blows up illegal toothfish ship sought by Interpol
The Indonesian warship KRI Imam Bonjol-383 responded to a report from maritime air surveillance officials that 12 foreign fishing boats were illegally working in the Natuna Sea, First Admiral Edi Sucipto said.

Following warning shots, one of the fishing boats stopped and was found to be a Chinese boat with one women and six men as crew, all of whom were Chinese citizens, he said.

Chinese fishermen has become increasingly active in international waters after the severe depletion of fish resources caused by overfishing and pollution in the waters near home.

But their illegal fishing activities have often resulted in arrests, leading to diplomatic tension between China and its neighbours.

Last week, South Korean coastguard commandos seized two Chinese fishing boats operating illegally in the neutral waters of the Han River estuary between the two Koreas.

The development comes after Seoul reported a growing number of Chinese fishing boats trespassing into the military buffer zone as blue crab season went into full swing. The intrusions have fuelled security concerns over the closely monitored frontline region, South Koreas’ Yonhap News Agency reported.

Did I just read an iromy in that news article?

So I guess China will invoke UNCLOS if it suits them, but if another country invokes UNCLOS against China, the Chinese govt. will react negatively and say UNCLOS has no jurisdiction.

Indonesian navy fires on Chinese boat, Beijing says one injured

An Indonesian naval vessel fired on a Chinese fishing boat on Friday, injuring one person, China's foreign ministry said, the countries' third reported confrontation this year near a chain of islands as regional tensions mount in the South China Sea.

Indonesia's navy said it had fired warning shots at several boats with Chinese flags that it accused of fishing illegally near the Natuna Islands - but a spokesman told Reuters there had been no injuries.

Indonesia is not part of a broader regional dispute over China's reclamation activities in the South China Sea and Beijing's claims on swathes of key waterways.

But Jakarta has objected to China's inclusion of parts of the Indonesian-ruled Natuna Islands within a "nine-dash line" that Beijing marks on maps to show its claim on the body of water.

China has said it does not dispute Indonesia's sovereignty over the Natuna Islands, although the statement said the area where the incident occurred is subject to overlapping interests.

The Indonesian warship damaged one Chinese fishing boat and detained another with seven people on board, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said on the ministry website on Sunday.

Hua said the Chinese coast guard rescued the injured fisherman, who was transported to the southern Chinese island province of Hainan for treatment where his injuries were under control.

It was unclear from the statement whether Indonesia was still holding the vessel and those aboard.

Beijing had made official protests over the incident, the ministry said in its statement, and urged Indonesia not to take any more actions to complicate the situation. There have been two other encounters reported between Indonesian naval vessels and Chinese fishing boats near the islands this year.

BEIJING -- China's Foreign Ministry said Sunday that the Indonesian navy opened fire at a Chinese fishing boat in the South China Sea, injuring a fisherman and detaining its seven-man crew.

The statement posted on the ministry's website was in response to reports that Indonesia's navy said that it had intercepted and detained a Chinese vessel and its seven crew members for illegally fishing in Indonesian waters.

The incident happened Saturday off the Natuna islands, off the northwest coast of Borneo, in the South China Sea. The waters in question are claimed by both China and Indonesia.

China's Foreign Ministry said the Chinese fishing boat was carrying out normal fishing operations in its traditional fishing grounds when the Indonesian navy shot at it, harming one fisherman and damaging the boat. It said the injured crew member had already been transferred to China's southern Hainan Island for treatment and was in stable condition.

It said it had strongly protested the actions by the Indonesian navy, which had "abused its military force."

It is at least the third such incident since March, when Indonesia intercepted a Chinese fishing vessel off the Natuna islands. In May, an Indonesian frigate fired shots at a Chinese trawler when it refused to stop fishing, and then seized the vessel and its eight crew members.

China's claims to virtually the entire South China Sea overlap with those of several other Asian countries and the waters have emerged as a possible regional flashpoint.

In January 1958 the CIA began developing covert support networks to the PRRI and Permesta rebels. CIA support of the Permesta rebels came in the form of 15 B-26 bombers and some P-51 Mustang fighters which formed the insurgent airforce AUREV (Angkatan Udara Revolusioner) based on Manado airfield, large amounts of weapons and equipment, significant funds, plus an international cast of CIA agents and mercenaries from Taiwan, Poland, the Philippines and the USA.[6] Emboldened by CIA aid, the rebels began a series of airstrikes against cities in Sulawesi and Maluku held by central government. The cities bombed by CIA-piloted insurgent planes included Balikpapan, Makassar, and Ambon. On 15 May 1958, insurgent planes bombed the marketplace of Ambon, killing large numbers of civilians attending Ascension Sunday services.

Responding to rebel and insurgent attacks, President Sukarno ordered the Indonesian military to crush the PRRI-Permesta rebellion. A series of air raids by the Indonesian Air Force (AURI) on Manado destroyed most of the rebel B-26 planes. Meanwhile, a rebel B-26 bomber was shot down on 18 May 1958 by Indonesian pilot Ignatius Dewanto over Ambon. The B-26 pilot, the American CIA agent Allen Pope, was captured alive, exposing the CIA's deep involvement in the rebellion. Consequently, the CIA began to withdraw its support of the rebellion. Pope was eventually tried, convicted and sentenced to death in Jakarta, before being released at a later date.

Based on this story, even America would withdraw when things go wrong and no longer work in their favour. So, what would China do?

It is deliberate provocation.

But Americans have just silently cut a large pounds meat from you in one economic crisis, that is more economical and more efficient for them than one stupid provocation.:pop:

You hint Americans were afraid of you!!!!

It is deliberate provocation.
It is a deliberate move to repel unwanted intrusion inside Indonesia's jurisdiction

But Americans have just silently cut a large pounds meat from you in one economic crisis, that is more economical and more efficient for them than one stupid provocation.
How very convenient to blame all on Americans.

You hint Americans were afraid of you!!!!
Not quite right. He hint that Indonesia don't "afraid" of Americans

FYI: At year 2002/May/20 , China was the first country established diplomatic relations with East Timor. We able and willing to free Aceh at anytime soon.

Is that so... how impressive.. can you elaborate how you plan to do that?

As for Indonesia, it is crystal clear... we will keep seizing Chinese fisherman fishing illegaly inside our waters and then blow up their ship. Just wait for the news...
If Chinese fisherman don't take note, this will become a norm in the future... :drag:

there couldnt be any overlapped area between China and Indonesia.

only China could make such a funny claim. Only China fight back Indonesia .

Indonesia may want to support Philippines in the legal case, which deny the China claim by dashed line.

Indonesia will never let foreign flagged fishing boat to steal fish in our waters! And we have been very clear about it!

China govt should stop playing the victim and get your fishermen in order before anyone get hurt!

I hope your govt can start giving your fishermen the internationally recognized map and stop using the “chinese traditional” map!

And wth is china coast guard doing in our EEZ? Isn’t this a violation of maritime laws? Where is your respect to our sovereignity?

EEZ is international water. So everyone can trespass in EEZ. Let be clear about that.
